Damn you Dave! Guess I'll have to swing over to Amazon.com again.

Let me agonize you further:

I think this might be the best RPG I own and I own over 200.:haw:

Quote from: McrowYes, prep time with D20 has been a huge factor for me not playing it a lot.

Ditto. I like most of the system but as the default GM I found the decision to alleviate the burden on other players by nearly tripling the GM's workload to be very unfun (largely due to my work schedule, which severely limits the time I have available to prep for games). This is the same reason that I don't play HERO or GURPS anymore.

Watch out for Grubman.  He'll have you marching in a giant parade of happy people and then just as you near the cliff, he's on the other side of the field, starting up a new parade.  Gamers ADD, Indeed.  :)

I do owe him for Savage Worlds.  My go-to system now for when I want tactical action-packed fun.  But it hurts just a tiny bit to see him laughing in the park with a new mistress.

Ah, that's the old me...I actually have been very focused for a couple years now.  Saga is the only thing I've really "pimped" since Savage Worlds, and my purchases have been few and far inbetween.  I've pretty much cut down on impulse buys and Indie games (that I just have to check out because everyone is talking about them).

Sure, I get a bug up my ass to run something odd every now and then, but I kicked my "gamer ADD" some time ago, and as time goes on it has just been getting better.  Oddly, after cutting down my collection to the minimum, and putting the games I will actually GM into a pile, I ended up with D&D 3.5, Star Wars Saga (replacing D20), M&M, and Savage Worlds.  That's about it, and haven't really had much interest elsewhere.

I'll certainly investigate different things, and stay on top of new releases, but it's going to take something spectacular to change my game preferences.

Now if a new edition of D20 Modern Saga comes out, Savage Worlds will have a serious run for it's money as my go to "everything else" game system.:)

I agree.  I no longer own scads of games, but last time I counted the ones I have owned/read it was over 300.

Quote from: grubmanWell, I'm wrapping up work on the adventure I posted over on RPGnet.  I've statted up 3 1st level characters, 2 4th level characters, 2 beasts, 2 vehicles, and 4 nonheroics.

Using an excel spreadsheet I picked up on the WotC Mess hall forum (sorry, I don't have a link), and having acquired a passing familiarity with the rule book in the last week, it took me about 5 minutes (tops) each to make these.  Cut and pasting the stat block I already typed up and modifying them takes another couple minutes.

In other words, I can now verify that Saga has totally alleviated the time consuming problem (of standard D20) of writing up NPCs, even for those of higher level.

I have to even say, with the simple skill training system, it's faster than Savage Worlds (the fastest and simplest system, yet crunchy, I can compare it to).  It still takes a bit of juggling with feats to get exactly the abilities you may want...but nothing that gives you a headache.

All I can say is...:D

You are EVIL grubman Pure Darksideer you are. You sold me ;)

I can't.  D6 is about the fastest there is.  If you use a template, it's simply a matter of adding a few dice.  If it's an NPC there really aren't any rules, everything is 2D6 unless I give it a higher die code...but the exchange for this level of simplicity are characters/NPCs that aren't statistically as exciting or diverse.

Apples & Oranges

I compared Saga to Savage Worlds because I think they are very similar in crunch vs. ease of use.

Oh, Grubman-for-the-win.

I really, really do hope that SWS (or whatever) is a good game, because I, personally, thought that the previous d20 iterations were kinda meh-to-poopy, and although I don't play 'em or need 'em, other folks, who deserve better, do.

I'm a huge fan of D6, and I've been rather meh, myself about the D20 version(s).

I picked up Saga Edition at the FLGS the other day and man...  Grubman ain't joking.  This game is slick.  You owe it to yourself to check it out.

I think that, like Savage Worlds, the real test will be in actual play.  That'll let me evaluate whether the mechanics back up this incredibly fast and easy build-set.

About the only thing I'm sorta disappointed about so far is that TK Force powers are still split up into various, "Force Push," "Force Slam," "Move Object," discrete powers.

Rezendevous

I read through it in a Borders today (they don't carry RPGs, but they had this stuck in with the other large Star Wars books).  I was really impressed with the presentation -- very tight and well-organized, with just the right amount of art.  I think I'll be picking this up this week sometime.

I've read similar sentiments on many other threads or forums and would be surprised if WotC didn't put out a new modern game with the lighter rules. It would probably replace Savage Worlds in my collection as well.

I am really starting to appreciate games that cut down on GM prep time. I hope this trend with D20 continues.
