This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Rime of the Frostmaiden
« on: October 14, 2021, 08:52:20 PM »
So there been a lot of talk about combat wheelchairs, gay gnome kings, and fantasy proms. But has anyone checked out the Icewind Dale book? Any good?

Quote
Beneath the unyielding night sky, you stand before a towering glacier and recite an ancient rhyme, causing a crack to form in the great wall of ice. Beyond this yawning fissure, the Caves of Hunger await. And past this icy dungeon is a secret so old and terrifying that few dare speak of it. The mad wizards of the Arcane Brotherhood long to possess that which the god of winter’s wrath has so coldly preserved—as do you! What fantastic secrets and treasures are entombed in the sunless heart of the glacier, and what will their discovery mean for the denizens of Icewind Dale? Can you save Ten-Towns from the Frostmaiden’s everlasting night?

I'm playing in it, under a first-time (15yo) DM. Having fun so far. My monk is writing a tally of things he has punched.
We seem to be wandering around a bit, guessing at where to go next, and getting in over our heads at times.
Good fun though!

I am currently running this campaign for my group.  I have made some changes to the module:

1. Auril is trying to make Icewind Dale into a Domain of Dread a la Ravenloft Campaign Setting. She has cordened of the region with a deadly freezing mist.  She is trying to escape Toril becsuse her power was diminished by Umberlee, and Talos and lart of her essence was trapped in an artifact known as The Ring Of Winter (See: Tomb of Annihilation).

2. The Duergar Leader, Xardarok Sunblight, is a paraplegic, and has a flying Combat Wheelchair.

3. The Town Speaker of Bryn Shander Duvessa Shane, and the Sherriff Markham Southwell were leaders of a cult of Beshaba.  They intended to bleed the town dry by using the “lottery” to sacrifice people to Auril and confiscate their belonging and wealth. They planned to abscond with the wealth.  Unfortunately, they found out too late that no one was getting out of the Dale.

Shane and Southwell had an agreement with the killer Sephek Kaltro, who would ensure the sacrifices were dedicated to Auril.  But when he found out they wanted tk leave, he i formed them that he would lersonally hunt them down and “dedicate their souls to Auril” if they tried.  Thus they put the bounty out on Sephek.

Some of the Gods of Toril have taken an interest in Auril’s plan.  Umberlee and Talos want her gone so one of them can assume the role of the god of winter, and thus increase their power.

Helm, Lathander, Bahamut, and Sylvanus want to stop Auril, and if possible restore her to her old position as God of Winter. To return everything to normal.  They are trying to use the PC’s as their pawns.

The god Mask is offended that Auril is trying to “steal” a piece of Faerûn, and is trying to foil her plans on principle.

Asmodeus wants to see Auril dead so he can assume her power and become an even stronger diety. Levistus works against Asmodeus’ ends to take that power for himself.

The PC’s have freedom of choice to solve this however they want.  I am not emotionally attached to the outcome.

Like most WotC offerings these days there's a lot of cool concepts but you have to do A LOT of work to knock the whole thing into a coherent story.  It looks like it'd be fun to run/play but again it's almost more like a region guide with a thread of story for you to play through.

But I have to stress again there is a lot of cool stuff in the module.
