This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

I think he said that his PHD was in "Practical Magic." Since that was the title of his book, he may have picked it himself. The only degree for which I have seen any evidence, his BA was simply in "Magic." He did pay for a pizza for everyone in the store and he passed away a decade ago, so I'm done talking about him.

The BA was technically real. It was from an era where the UC system (or at least some of the schools) had briefly adopted a hippy-dippy concept of "students get to design their own BA title/field".  And he chose "magic". It was actually so humiliating that it caused the university to give up that program.

Now that is interesting.  Did the bookshop stop existing because he used the Magic or because he did not use the Magic?

When you understand the answer to this question, you will have achieved Enlightenment.

Book World closed because the landlord raised the rent, so we moved across the street. Location is really important and people just never got into the new location.

Location is crazy important. I've seen on commercial streets where you can literally have three storefronts in a row, in the middle of the block, and for some reason one of the three (sometimes the one in the middle!) can't hold a single successful business, while the ones on either side have both had the same business there for 30+ years!

In that case he should have used the Magic.

It would be worth the risk.
