This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

This is NOT the cover to my upcoming RPG, The Invisible College; but it's a good example of the type of art you'll be likely to find inside...

I'm always interested in getting the best magic rules for a particular RPG system. Looking forward to yours.

Moder... so you're going mostly with those pesky left-hand chaoticks?

In the game, when characters advance they'll be able to choose, if they're advancing as magicians, to advance in the more traditional (ie. golden dawn/A.'.A.'. - style) magical curriculum of organized training, or as Chaos magicians.

Switching back and forth is allowed.

Its important to use real imaginary magick and not fake imaginary magic.

I think the history and depth of or "real imaginary" magic actually does make it a lot more interesting than the other.
I suppose that sometimes some people want a little documentary in their fantasy. I'm certainly not one that's interested in this.

I think it's not so much documentary as tapping into people's actual methods of thought.  Tolkein's work is in part compelling because he draws on actual folklore and myth, which reflects the thoughts of a great many people and is already familiar to the general populace, and thus seems reasonable to us.  Sourcing from folks' actual belief in magic similarly invokes ( ;D ) the prior vetting of the material by many, many people and ideas that have filtered out into culture.

Interesting.  I've long wondered if Katherine Kurtz's Adept books are based on a similar approach - they seem so to me.  If you're familiar with the books, can you comment on if that's the type of play your game will provide?

Not familiar, sorry. I guess I'd say the closest thing to what my game will be like is a mix of This:

and a bit of this:

With this:

and this:

And of course this:

Yes. Because real imaginary magick actually does stuff in the real world. Real imaginary magick caused the sexual revolution and got us to the moon.

I cannot say the majority of your products interest me personally Pundit, but I really do admire your treading off the beaten path of OSR works.  None of the SOS we see from most OSR publishers/creators.

Hope it does well for you!

Thank you. And well, Lion & Dragon went spectacularly well for me, in spite of taking the system way over to an extreme edge of where those rules can go.

We'll see if there will be a similar interest in running the OSR mechanic in a modern fantasy action/occult game.

I disagree with this. It sounds dangerous, like 'children playing with napalm' dangerous. Then again, I didn't walk away from this stuff, I RAN! (and I'll keep running..)
Good luck with the book though. Enough interest for the subject matter.

Nah. I don't include anything that can actually do anything in the book, only descriptions of how magical theories, practices and techniques work. I even alter some of the ineffable names a bit, in case any idiot thinks of treating my RPG book like a grimoire.

I think having Bonewitz (author of "real magic") pontificating for hours in Book World when I worked there and couldn't leave soured me on it but I am sure Pundit can make something interesting out of it if anyone can. We had an extensive section of that type of thing which Pundit could have used for research if he weren't thousands of miles away and if the bookstore still existed.

For awhile there, he was hot stuff in the field. I am talking about book sales, not the effectiveness of his methods, since all such things are bullshit. But he was a reasonably reliable source of hot air.

The only significant magical act Bonewitz ever performed was game the University of California system at a time when it was at its stupidest, to get a "degree in witchcraft" or whatever he called it.

I think he said that his PHD was in "Practical Magic." Since that was the title of his book, he may have picked it himself. The only degree for which I have seen any evidence, his BA was simply in "Magic." He did pay for a pizza for everyone in the store and he passed away a decade ago, so I'm done talking about him.

Now that is interesting.  Did the bookshop stop existing because he used the Magic or because he did not use the Magic?
