Drawing within the box so to speak, be it Savage worlds, etc... is absolutely the way to go for most people.

Most people seriously underestimate the discipline needed to create a 'all new' system that is actually worth anything.

In fact you should do a video on the pros and cons of using different SRD based systems when making an RPG; OSR variants, d100 BRP variants etc.

The BRP variants have not gotten nearly as creative as the OSR versions, but in fairness the 3.x srd has been around a bit longer and they do have a D&D connection.

Was "Release umpteenth slightly house ruled version of OD&D White Box" one of the design movements? Because one of those seems to come out every week or so.

And then there is the almost as popular, release a new clone of B/X and charge money for it. Because all the other ones that are free are garbage or something.

So creative!

Are you living in 2007?

Because I haven't seen a Clone in the OSR for a long time now.  The Clone Wars are over; I won.

Didn't B/X essentials release again just a little bit ago? Wasn't that a clone?

Well, I didn't even notice. I don't think most other people did.  The vast majority of OSR products today are totally innovative.

This.

The most innovative OSR game I've seen so far is Beyond the Wall, and even then because it went out of the OSR design space for inspiration.

It's the only ones I bother with.
