This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Since there is no Dark Age of Camelot RPG... how would you cobble one together?

Evening All,

Could you recommend how could I run this setting for a group as a tabletop RPG?

If I can prioritize my list of requirements:

Fairly Crunchy
Multiple themed magic (so basically wizards, druids and norse magic)
Multiple Melee options for melee oriented characters
Not necessarily as Monty Haul as D&D but magic items shouldn't be too rare

I'm open to any and all methods of doing this. Including of course a fairly generic system approach but with recommendation of which supplements.

To be honest, I'm surprised there isn't a DAOC RPG out there already.

Thanks!

JeremyR

It's an incredibly niche MMORPG. Popular ones like Everquest and WoW didn't really have stand alone games, just ones based on D&D/d20. (Diablo, too for that matter).

Anyway, I think Rolemaster might be a fit, from what I remember of DAOC (won a boxed set about 10 years ago)

I['ve never played Dark Age of Camelot, but it seems like Pendragon might be a good start since it's already built for King Arthur stuff. I haven't played Rolemaster in a long time and don't recall all of the details, but Pendragon is a lot like Runequest (or Stormbringer or Call of Cthulhu) in its mechanics and I think is similar to Rolemaster but with fewer details.

I would use GURPS (because I know it so well it's easy for me) or The Fantasy Trip (which I'd recommend to beginners, though you'd need to split the spell list or make your own versions of the DAoC spells to get the themed magic).

Amazing that it is still alive. I liked it but enjoyed the original Asheron's Call much better.

From what I remember of the history with DAOC development. The game engine was originally going to be built based on Rolemaster.
That all fell apart from when I.C.E. collapsed.

DAOC was the first paid subscription MMORPG I played and I loved it.

I think a Slimmed down Rolemaster, perhaps like the Classic edition would be the best fit. But then I used to play RM a LOT many years ago, so I'm probably biased.

Charon's Little Helper

It depends if you're going for a similar vibe of the fluff - or more similar in how the mechanics actually worked.

The vibe they were going for seemed reasonably gritty - with the lost glory of Camelot as the other factions broke away etc.  Going for the vibe - I'd probably go for something with Vitality/Life Points and without too much zero to hero.  Go ACKS if you want to get into seiges etc.? (I've only skimmed it - so I'm not really sure about that.)

In practice - while I liked the game, the mechanics outside of the (pretty cool) PvP stuff were mostly pretty generic for MMOs at the time. A few unique abilities - but those could be done with custom classes in any system. Mostly to fit how it played, just make sure to pick a system with plenty of HP cushion & asymmetric classes. So... most fantasy games?

Having never played DAOC, I wondered the same.
