Because the purpose of a troll is to shut down the discussion by any means necessary. If it can't be done with pseudo-reason blather, the troll will try deflection and/or lying, and then when all else fails, making the conversation about them instead of the subject.  Some will try to avoid that last step so as to maintain some level of credibility for the next time, in the hopes that people will forget. 

If a person normally engaging in this trollish behavior wants to talk rationally about RPGs in another topic, then you have to decide how much of that is genuine and how much is to provide cover for later.  Some people just dip into trolling occasionally or on certain topics.   It's hard to tell with some people.  If the troll isn't even making a token effort in that regard, the best thing you can do is ignore* them, because attention only encourages them.   

*Where "ignore" can mean actual ignore list for the worst offenders of course, but can also mean simply not responding to their trolling posts while engaging with them when they at least put on the appearance of good behavior.
