Title: Sci-Fi kickstarter: Coriolis (from the makers of Mutant: Year Zero)
Post by: tenbones on July 12, 2016, 12:21:56 PM
So I remember Skywalkers threat about Mutant: Year Zero. When I saw this KS - it intrigued me. The mechanics of Mutant: Year Zero are an unknown factor to me. Anyone run a campaign with it?

Coriolis

The setting looks pretty fun to me. Definitely my vibe.

Looks like dice-pool mechanics. Count successes/crits. Free preview of their other game at http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/137280/Mutant-Year-Zero-FREE-Preview

ADDED:
Looks like different machanics though.

Narrative Shitshow :D

QuoteThe twist to this simple base is not pushing rolls as in Mutant: Year Zero, but something different that ties in directly to the theme of Coriolis: prayer to the Icons. The Icons and the worship of them are central to the game setting. Praying to an Icon will give you a reroll - but not without cost. Each reroll also gives the GM a Darkness Point, which she can use for a range of adverse effects later on in the session. Sooner or later, the Icons will claim what’s theirs and restore balance in the dark between the stars.

Translation: You spend OOC meta-points to choose to be awesome, understanding as a player that the GM is going to use those to power his own poor NPCs, who without your permission via Choose-to-be-Awesome points, probably can't even use their abilities.

But...they managed to hide the process as actually invoking alien intelligences, so they managed to tie it to character choice rather than the standard lameass pisspoor "effort" excuse.

So plausibly IC if you don't think about what those points mean on the GM end or why Makazuunka the Icon gives two shits that the Crime Lord you're fighting wins and so grants the Crime Lord the same bonus you just got, but the Crime Lord didn't have to invoke anything. ;)

I'd rather just see their Coriolis setting written for Traveller. But I already have enough settings written for Traveller.

2d20 system right?  I ran Mutant Chronicles some this year.  It's a really weird game.

oops, nope!

Actually, it looks like a bit of Dune and a bit of Fading Suns and a bit of Starwars.

Just like almost everything else.

Still, kinda neat.

Looks pretty great to me. It uses the same system as MY0. Rolls are d6 dice pools determined by attribute plus skill. Each is numbered from 1 to 5. Each 6 rolled is a success. There are 4 attributes and 3 skills per attribute.

The metagame mechanic from MY0 has changed slightly. You can chose to reroll any failed roll but doing so gives the GM a "darkside" point to use. The narrative of this is you are invoking the Icons (dark gods of the setting) to succeed.

There are classes but they just determine which attribute you can start at 5 (if you wish to do so), which 3 talents you can chose from at the start (most talents are generic though), and which special skill you have.

The other highlight will be the spaceship rules. If its like the community rules they are based on from MY0, PCs will be able to spend downtime to help develop, improve, and construct parts of their spaceship. Presumably, this can be guns and armour, but also brigs, shuttle bays, recreation rooms etc.

I'm not a hardcore sci-fi person (I'm more into Star Wars and the like), but the setting for this game looks so cool I had to back it. I like the Icons and the prayer mechanic. Never played MY0 but it looks like a cool system based on DTRPG's free preview.

I am not a hardcore Sci Fi fan either. The listed inspiration of Firefly meets 1001 Arabian Nights suggests that it may have a broader appeal.

Sooooo tempted to get this. Soooo over-extended on gaming purchases.  Sigh.

Interview here: http://obskures.de/2016/coriolis-the-third-horizon-an-interview-with-kosta-kostulas/

This just sounds better and better. To clarify the above, they have got rid of the dice distinctions and damage to attributes, which will speed up play.

Yeah, I backed it. I also really like Muntant Year Zero.
Note that the new Mutant Chronicles (2d20) uses different system than MYZ (d6 dice pool).

I backed it since I am listening to Arabian Nights at work right now, and the mix of Firefly and 1001 is intriguing.

Looks like they may put out some quick-start rules to preview. I hope they do, it would really help to see how the system really works.

I am intrigued by the Firefly / 1001 Arabian Nights concept, but what I really want is to just play Fading Suns again...and either using Traveller or D6.

The MY0 Starter Book will give you a good idea of the mechanics.
