This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Deep IC?

I don't see deep immersion as a form of mental illness, I don't like deep immersion players; I'm not even all that big a fan of much IC talk.  I'm very much a "my guy...", "he does..." type player.

I mean, I'll do some IC stuff like taunts and all that, and as a GM I'll do some window dressing like setting up the scene.  Such as when the players go to the Swords 'n Things adventuring shop on the corner, I'll engage in a little chatter:

"'Allo there.  Welcome to da Swords 'n Tings."

"Hullo good sir we wish to purchase some provisions."

"Well step right dis way frien'."

And things like that.  But full on dialogs with subtle innuendoes, logic tricks, arguments and all that jazz tend to get handwaved with a "here's the bottom line" approach.

I'd suggest that they lie on different scales.

Quote from: James McMurrayIt wasn't meant as an insult, but it's definitely what my friends would wonder if I started acting like I was a different person. Not just in character, but as the character. My group has nobody that was in Drama in High School, and all guys, so that's just our style.

Thanks for the replies, and honestly no insult was intended.
If you say you did not mean it as such, then I'll take you at your word.

But you may wish to consider that it's not really a terribly good idea to go about implying that anyone who enjoys a different playstyle than you do is insane or otherwise mentally deficient.

It tend to be taken poorly by a lot of folks.

You're absolutely right. I give people hell about that left and right, and should have paid more attention to my own side of the barn.

I can understand that style of play and sometimes will play in that mode myself, but RPGing at that level alone seems to me to defeat the entire purpose of RPGing.  To me, such a game without immersion would be a completely unfulfilling game, unless there were deep mechanical and tactical considerations to find myself engaged in.

For the record, I didn't find it insulting.  I can understand why the descriptions people give of deeply immersive experiences sound a bit like insanities like multiple personality disorders and might give someone the wrong impression if they've never had the experience.
