If you wanted to run a Mouse Guard game but get rid of its needlessly fiddly default bean counting and storygamy mechanics, what (kind of) system do you think would be appropriate?

Historia Rodentia - using Legend (MRQII)

Green Ronin's A Song of Ice and Fire would be my pick. The fact of being mice is less relevant to recreating MG than the gritty medieval world IMO. Also, given all PCs are mice, there is no real need for species mechanics.

Only Hombre can answer what he means by "Storygamy", but if that definition includes OOC metagame and literary emulation mechanics, then you want to steer well clear of SIFRP.  Then again, unlike some other systems, I've found the SIFRP ones very flexible and easy to tune without affecting the foundation of all resolution.

I assume you are referring to the abilityof or the players to create your House during character creation and the social conflict system. If so, I agree that they are included in SIFRP. I imagine the first would be dropped for Mouse Guard (can't think of what you would use it for) but the second might be of use given how MG tends to be much about intrigue as fighting YMMV.

Also the choosing of injuries and wounds vs. defeat, the results of defeat, etc...  There's a lot of little meta things in there.  If you are playing Mouse Guard though, you probably do want some literary emulation there, so tweaking some of the combat stuff could work for him.

I own Hyperborean Mice but I haven't run or played it. It's presented as a kind of sword & sorcery with anthropomorphic mice. My idea of Mouse Guard is that the characters are rather vulnerable and have to rely on resourcefulness, teamwork and perseverance. Though there's plenty of opportunity for intrigue I don't really see the need for mechanics covering that aspect in much detail.

There's a Savage Worlds "conversion" available on the internet but I don't think SW is gritty enough.

Fudge (as used in Terra Incognita) might actually not be a bad option.

I was also thinking BRP. I'm unfamiliar with Legend, which is apparently required for Historia Rodentia. How BRP-compatible would you say Historia Rodentia is?

Why not D&D? :D

Harvesters (from the Troll Lord crew) uses Castles & Crusades and Woodland Warriors (from Simon "Barbarians of Lemuria" Washbiurne) uses Swords & Wizardry.

Well if it's more or less Legend, then very, but Legend will have a more complicated combat system.  Download the Legend pdf from Drivethru, it's one US dollar.

Sneak a peek at my mini-review of Harvesters here on this very site!

Honestly not sure if things have changed any with that game, so my paltry review may no longer hold any sort of water if indeed they've updated said bad-boy.  I'd suggest the game for its familiarity (system wise) if anything else.
I start from his boots and work my way up. It takes a good half a roll to encompass his jolly round belly alone. Soon, Father Christmas is completely wrapped in clingfilm. It is not quite so good as wrapping Roy but it is enjoyable nonetheless and is certainly a feather in my cap.

I chose Hyperborean Mice for two reasons:

-Because its premise is very similar to the one of Mouse Guard; a setting where PCs are mice, and an owl is as terrifying as a dragon.

-Because the system looks very good. In fact, if my group doesn't buy the premise, I could use it as a generic fantasy game with human characters.

Do you think that Hyperborean Mice isn't a good match for Mouse Guard? If so, why?
