I have no idea what this is.

You should have run D&D.

There is something essentially Pundit somewhere deep down these three lines.

I would have thought that you would have known of it. Dragon Warriors is a fantasy RPG originally released in the early 80s in the UK, Australia and New Zealand. It was sold in fiction book sized installments and sat on the shelf next to young adult fantasy fiction books, including Fighting Fantasy. As a result, it probably introduced as many young RPGers to the hobby as BECMI D&D did at the time in those countries.

In terms of UK (and Commonwealth) RPGs, this is the BECMI equivalent, where WFRP would have been the AD&D equivalent. The setting has a dark folklorish atmosphere and strong historical feel that many consider to be its strength. Dragon Warriors has recently been re-released almost unchanged from its first incarnation, which still holds up remarkably well, other than organisation of material, form factor and art.

Overall, Dragon Warriors is a well regarded RPG with excellent pedigree. If you are a fan of older editions of D&D, WFRP and/or Advanded Fighting Fantasy, you should check it out.

You can find out more about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragon_Warriors

FWIW I have run D&D for them too. That's one reason why I put Ravenloft up as an option. They won't touch 3e based on their own experiences, but they have enjoyed B/X and 4e so far.

... and it was available in other countries as well. All three game stores in Hanover, Germany had it on their shelves.

The original paperbacks are among my most prized possessions. They influenced me (and my setting design) more than any other game.

Greywulf, the designer of Microlite20, is a huge fan of DW. Long ago he had a "Dragon Warriors Week" on his blog.
Swords & Wizardry & Manga ... oh my.
(Beware. This is a Kickstarter link.)

That picture of the fighting dice and the comic book example of combat are genius. They are burnt in my memory just as much as the picture of Emirkol or Morgan Ironwolf. :)

It is almost poetic...

I first thought it was a haiku, but the syllables don't match. Still, it has rhytm.

Nitpick:
Quote from: WikipediaTraditional haiku consist of 17 on (also known as morae), in three phrases of 5, 7 and 5 on respectively. (...) Although haiku are often stated to have 17 syllables, this is incorrect as syllables and on are not the same.

(I used to have a link explaining this in more detail but I lost it...)

Sounds like someone should totally tell Serpent King to send Pundit a review copy of Dragon Warriors.

They'd be welcome to do so.

Yeah, if Dark Albion is anything to go by, Pundit would have an absolute blast with DW.

Quote from: Dirk Remmecke;583638Skywalker, how did the high school game go?

I had a change of heart last minute :o I became concerned that Elven Crystals was too big scenario for the time I had left, so instead I ran Darkness Before Dawn from the Dragon Warriors rulebook. I have run this before and its an excellent scenario and (more importantly) self contained.

The players loved it. It was creepy and atmospheric. They picked up the system in no time and they also picked up on the higher lethality pretty quickly and reacted appropriately :)

I found another review that might whet his appetite.

Thanks!

My only qualms with Darkness Before Dawn is the almost railroadish linearity, which is in stark contrast to most of the more open original adventures from the paperbacks.

What was the context of the high school gaming? Was it part of an after school program? How was it organised/advertised?

True. But that also makes it more playable in 3 hours, which is all I ended up having for this game.

The high school club is run by a teacher that is a member of a wargame club. The two club combine monthly meets. The teacher is also a RPGer, so RPGs are allowed and are often more popular. I have been running there for a few years now.

RPGPundit

Again, I'd be glad to review it!
