This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Romance gets in the way of the job, so I shit-can it whenever possible.  When I'm beyond the walls of the citadel, as it were, there's no time for love; it's all about the mission, the dungeon, the monster-slaying and the loot-hauling.

Hmmm...I guess sex was always part of my games. I've run picking up wenches, Platonic interspecies love, sneaky affairs, various crushes, old flames, lust and marriage. I'm always sniffing around this area.

In my long running ALIEN U game one of the heroes (Lode) has a girlfriend who been a single issue supervillain (getting revenge on being raped, she got herself superpowers), after he'd helped her deal with it before she sought revenge (supporting her after the act--date rape by a professor :(.)  She realized who he was and kinda turned aside being a villain since the reason was gone and the person who'd been kind was standing against her. They developed a dating relationship over the months of play time, and a few "months" setting time she and he consumated the relationship and she is nor pregnant.

More recently another player after rejecting the childish advances of an alien he'd helped out (while his age physically or OLDER, she had the emotional maturity of a 13 year old) he found a relationship with the purely human daughter of there new mentor.

In my Shadow X-men game the teens have at least one Crush (a  bear-shapeshifter girl, crushing on the  catthing/Liger-shapeshifter boy of the 'enemy' team)

So yes, not only to I have romances, but I have failed ones, children (or potential children) and so on.

In a recent In Harm's Way game, two PCs visiting a Muslim ruler were gifted with slave concubines. One of the PCs resisted temptation, as he was deeply in love with his wife, while the other succumbed. It was fascinating to see how they reacted, and how much it disturbed both characters - and their players - because of the slave angle as much as the sexual tension.

My current group would probably unanymously shout "score!" unless they thought it was a trap. Depending on the campaign they might free the slaves before or after the scorage.

In my games it tends to depend on the game in question being run.  Just for example, right now:

1. In my Roman campaign, Rome being what it is, marriages are not uncommon but usually for convenience's sake.  There were one or two significant romances that PCs were involved with (in particular a female player/player character's romantic relationship over the course of many years with Claudius, that ended pretty sadly).

2. In my Three Kingdoms campaign I expect it to be more of the same, but its too soon to know.

3. In my Legion campaign, the Legion being what it is, romance is pretty significant. One of the PCs is playing Ultra Boy, and has been in a romantic relationship with Phantom Girl since pretty much the beginning of the campaign.  Some of the others have had romantic entanglements of lesser degrees.

4. In warhammer, there's no romance. There is sex with comely wenches, of course. Also, one of the PCs is a halfling prostitute.

I think "of" and "these" are both redundant. Quoting the post made it clear which words you were referring to.

I don't mind having characters with "real world" types of entanglements, and that includes romantic interests and/or spouses.  But I'm not getting into detailed roleplaying of those scenes when the game table basically constitutes a bunch of other guys.  "Fade to black" is sufficient.

and my players too. I suppose it's easy when 4 of your seven players are women. But even before, in my previous groups when the ratio of women to men was much less, romance played a big part of the game.

In every campaign love/lust always became a part of the proceedings. In a mostly male group this element was present but a bit subdued because of the weird factor and also because of the maturity factor...but as we grew older, it become a lot more natural to want what we saw in books and films incorporated in our games, and this eventually trumped the weird factor.

And no matter what anyone says, IME gaming with women helped this process along.

David R

I atarted out with a 50-50 ratio of women to men, back in 1977, and I kept it that way for a long time. I think it made a huge difference in the way I run games.

Like Pundit said, it depends on the game.  My Buffy game?  Oh yeah.  Sex and romance has been a frequent complication.  The game's all about the drama of high school, so that's natural.  We also have couples in our group, and no one's been overly uncomfortable.  Well, maybe the time I made them all roleplay asking for dates to homecoming, but that was just me being a bastard.  :p

I hadn't planned much in my 'upcoming but keeps getting put off' Exalted game, but one player turned in a character that runs a brothel and uses the 'pillow talk' to learn all the secrets of the city.  So I'm sure it'll come up there as well.

But I've had many games where it didn't come up at all.
I have a theory, it could be witches, some evil witches!
Which is ridiculous 'cause witches they were persecuted Wicca good and love the earth and women power and I’ll be over here.

I'll go with "women abound but no hanky-panky in the TARDIS."

It's a sausage party, usually, and we do NOT feel comfortable romancing each other, even in a fictional context.

Even when I game with women, I'm already in a relationship with my wife. I don't need to go to an RPG for a facsimile thereof. I play for the action-adventure and strange new worlds.
In order to qualify as a roleplaying game, a game design must feature:

1. A traditional player/GM relationship.
2. No set story or plot.
3. No live action aspect.
4. No win conditions.

Don't like it? Too bad.

We've done a wedding game.
99% of the romances have been player to npc.
I've had a lot of girls at the table over the years, the best we've ever done is 50% female in the group.
Romance among the players has caused more problems than romance in the game.
