Last week I played the truly mint Red Box Hack by Eric Provost, it's still a work in progress but one that I've taken to my heart. It's got cool powers, stunts, tactical bits, the monster building beats most other FRGs hands down IMHO. My mate Tony reckons it's the storygame flipside to FtA!

It's even got me drawing.

What do you think of RBH ?

That's a Red Box "hack" in the manner an apple is an orange hack.

Quote'Welcome to the second edition of The Redbox Hack. What started out as an attempt to boil down the  elements of red box D&D I found entertaining has turned into something with a life of it’s own. You don’t have to squint too hard to see some of those original D&D elements here. Classes, levels, and a system that revolves around killing monsters and surviving the hacking. But there’s a lot of indie-game sensibilities in here too.'

There you go, Joe :)

LOL.  It's all indie-game sensibility.  You'd need to have eagle eyes and a pretty good imagination to draw any sort of direct parallel to Red Box DnD.

It's so funny, AZ, that you zeroed in on that line.  It's what jumped out at me.

I mean, I don't want to derail, but just what are "indie-game sensibilities?" Classes aren't? Do those of you that are small-press/independent publishers and have games with classes - where are your sensibilities? How does one get "indie-game sensibilities?" Is there a club? Oh, yeah, actually, there is....

I think I've got it:  they don't mean "hack" as in an extension or modification of the Red Box, but rather in the sense that the game is about "'Hack' and Slash" in the simplistic style of Red Box DnD.

At least, I think I've got it... because that's about the only thing it has in common with B/X or BECMI.

Good marketing though.  Got me to download it.  Now, to play it?  Riiiiiight...

Or a Naga who splits in two - well until he eats his other half.

Anyway, I like it. Damn my enthusiasm !

Hey, I'm not judging, I'm just asking what sets it apart, why it's getting love.

Sappy as it sounds, I just like seeing happy gamers.

Yep!  And as Sean mentions you can also play a Snakeman, or a Fox (potentially with three tails that allow you to fly), along with the more traditional classes of Warrior, Magus, Mystic, and Longrunner (Thief/Ninja).

Strangely, although I normally wouldn't touch a game with this level of "Furry" in it, I downloaded it, gave it a read over, and found it sort of charming in an enthusiastically strange sort of way.  Not sure that I'd ever play it, but I can say that of most of the games that I have.  It was a fun read, at least.
