This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

IBN Fadlan and the Land of Darkness!
« on: August 01, 2022, 01:41:15 PM »
Greetings!

I think that this book about Ibn Fadlan, the Arab Chronicler and Adventurer, detailing his many travels and adventures, is a fascinating and inspiring book! There are many interesting details about different cultures, races, creatures, as well as geography and landscape. Ibn Fadlan also discusses various family relationships, political relationships, as well as fighting, tactics, leadership, and warfare.

My copy is "IBN FADLAN: Ibn Fadlan and the Land of Darkness" by Penguin Classics, 239 pages.

I highly recommend this book for lots of interesting reading and inspiration, as history, but also for game campaigns.

Greetings!

Ibn Fadlan also discusses meeting true giants. His commentary has been a fascinating read! I also like his commentary and profiles on various tribe and cultures that he encounters along his travels. Very good stuff for providing details to tribes and cultures in a game campaign as well!

Fadlan is also the inspiration for the Arabic character in the fantastic film, "The 13th Warrior". ;D
