This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: AosI do think, though, that if I were in charge of launching a new edition of D&D, I'd time that release with the Holliday shopping season. I'm certain that there is a reason this wasn't done, but it is beyond me.
Possibly Wizards would prefer to concentrate on game lines which get an even greater boost in the holiday season? If you had a choice between getting a 10% raise in sales in two game lines, one which sells like gamer-crack (I'm thinking of Magic and Pokemon here) and one which sells steadily but modestly, or neglecting the latter and going for a 15% raise in the big-selling game line, it would make more financial sense to really push the big seller.
I am no longer posting here or reading this forum because Pundit has regularly claimed credit for keeping this community active. I am sick of his bullshit for reasons I explain here and I don\'t want to contribute to anything he considers to be a personal success on his part.

I recommend The RPG Pub as a friendly place where RPGs can be discussed and where the guiding principles of moderation are "be kind to each other" and "no politics". It\'s pretty chill so far.

Quote from: WarthurI am reasonably sure that Wizards of the Coast aren't going to go belly-up just because of the 3.5 market slowing down over Christmas. D&D isn't the only iron they have in the fire; I suspect even at its best it isn't even their most profitable one. It should be noted that they are slowing down their D&D release schedule - and making more of the products they put out system-independent, like the Grand History of the Realms - in order to account for this slowdown. It's not as if they haven't done this before with 3E.

If anything, this should be - in the short-term - good for the rest of the market. Remember, White Wolf managed to become as big as they did when AD&D was going through a very low patch indeed; historically speaking, whenever TSR/Wizards' sales have dropped, the sales of other RPGs have tended to rise as gamers spend their money on other games. In the long term, of course, D&D sales will spike again when 4E comes out; the question is how much, and how long the increased sales can be sustained.

I don't think that WotC is going to go belly-up either, but it still makes me wonder why they would court any sales loss during the Holiday Season.

As for other games, I don't know of a major release by anyone scheduled for the Holiday Season. Part of me is idly wondering why that is. Is it a perception that there is too much competition from console games? I dunno.
"Meh."

Between "NOW" and the release of D&D 4.0  WotC has announced several things thyat should still seel that are related to DUNGEONS & DRAGONS.

They have a new D&D miniatures expansion due out in mid-November that includes a preview of 4.0 game mechanics. This makes a lot of sense as the minis game is basically just the combat system yanked out of the roleplaying game and treated like its a boardgame.

There some book due for mid-DEcember (I forgot the title).
Late winter/early spring they re-introduce the D&D miniatures with a new starter set and boosters. This set is supposed to use the 4th edition D&D combat rules and come out at least a month before the new corebooks.
