This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Pulp Fantastic regular print run?
« on: May 04, 2015, 09:59:18 PM »
I noticed Pulp Fantastic  is now available in a print on demand softcover from DriveThru. Does  anyone know if a regular print run is still going to happen? And if so,  will this still be distributed through Chronicle City?

I don't know as I've never heard of this game before your post.  Assuming you have it and have played it, what makes it worthwhile? I'm always on the lookout for a game that caPtures the pulp-era (yes, era, it is not a genre and never was a genre) fiction I love so much.

I have Astounding Tales (sucks) for BRP, Two-Fisted Tales (ditto), Justice Inc. (pretty good but not a fan of Hero's front-loaded work), GURPS Cliffhangers (okay), Hollow Earth Expedition (blah), and Daredevils (pretty good but a little complicated). Maybe another I can't think of.  So far none of them quite does what I want it to do, which is to allow me to play crimefighters, jungle queens, aviators, detectives, G-men, barbarians, space Rangers, The Phantom, Pellucidar, Barsoom,  Tarzan, Sheena, The Spider, Doc Savage, The Continental Op, Conan, Captain Zero, Buck Rogers, etc., without having either the overly complicated mechanics or the stuff games have now where everybody is cashing in poker chips to alter bad dice rolls or change the setting to suit their whims. To be fair, not certain any game can really do what I ask for pulp heroes.

I'm just as surprised that this exists and I have the same question.

I know next to nothing about the DW:AiTAS system and I'm particularly curious as to how the system handles mad science and supernatural shenanigans.

Matt- if you get the chance and have $5, try looking at Astounding Tales 2nd ed by Howard Whitehouse.  It's a rules light quasi rpg- miniatures skirmish game- closer to rpg.  Great writing, very fun.

By the way, Astounding Tales from Whitehouse is a different thing that the BRP you mentioned.

I don't own the game as I am waiting for a print version to become available. I'm somewhat familiar with the Vortex system from Cubicle 7's Primeval RPG which, at least based on a read-through, looks quite good. The plan is to perhaps mix and match Primeval with Pulp Fantastic into some kind of pulp era dinosaur/time portal thingy.

Of the other pulp games you mentioned I think Two-Fisted Tales is actually a really good pulp game, though IMHO it has a clear proto-superhero flavour. Hollow Earth Expedition is a fun setting, but I'm not sure the system really emulates pulp style adventuring all that well. Astounding Adventures was indeed a bit of a let-down, though I expect Chaosium's upcoming Pulp Cthulhu to improve quite a bit on that.

HEX had a good setting and some good supplements but the actual system and reliance on cliche/stereotypes for character creation didn't thrill me. Also seemed very limited to "Lost World"/Indiana Jones stuff.

Two-Fisted Tales' mechanics just never worked for me and I didn't care for the way it seemed geared towards, as you say, quasi-super heroes. If I'm going to do super heroes, I have better games for it.

I'm not familiar with Primeval Tales or the Vortex (?) system.

Vortex is the system used in Cubicle 7's Rocket Age, Doctor Who: Adventures in Time and Space, Primeval and now Battlefield Press' Pulp Fantastic.

Good question. As I am getting a print copy from the Kickstarter, I am not sure if he's doing a print run for that, or if it's being done via Drivethru

Well, I think that officially there was going to be a regular print run and it was going to be available through Chronicle City but that may well have changed in light of recent developments.
I fully understand the publisher not keeping us perfectly in the loop at the moment, due to a personal tragedy which was mentioned on the KS, but I was just seeing if anybody here knew more than I do.
