This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Ghost Whistler

Is this a term that is copyright to GW?
"Ghost Whistler" is rated PG-13 (Parents strongly cautioned). Parental death, alien battles and annihilated worlds.

DKChannelBoredom

Not according to their own trademark list.
Running: Call of Cthulhu
Playing: Mainly boardgames

Why do you ask?

If you are realistically concerned about being sued then you should consult a lawyer who can tell you the difference between copyright, trademark, product identity, etc., etc.

Don't take legal advice from the internet. At least that is my advice. :)

My advice is to always trust the advice you get from the Internet.
For you the day you found a minor error in a Post by Spike and forced him to admit it, it was the greatest day of your internet life.  For me it was... Tuesday.

For the curious: Apparently, in person, I sound exactly like the Youtube Character The Nostalgia Critic.   I have no words.

Wikipedia - the site of ultimate truth - only has 40k references for Psyker which surprised me.   I would have thought such a term would have popped up in Anime and video games.

Soylent Green

If you are worried you can aways use the term "psycher", which in any event is the more natural spelling (from I presume the root "psyche"). Anyway that's whata I did for my homebrew.
New! Cyberblues City - like cyberpunk, only more mellow. Free, fully illustrated roleplaying game based on the Fudge system
Bounty Hunters of the Atomic Wastelands, a post-apocalyptic western game based on Fate. It\'s simple, it\'s free and it\'s in colour!

I found a ref to psyker on wiki for Gundam, which predates 40k by a while: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XM-X_Crossbone_Gundam

It also appears to be in the game Fallout: http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Psyker
Go an\' tell me I\'m ignored.

I don't know if this is the kind of thing that has any impact on the possibility of copyrighting a word, but 'psyker' is a normal and usable word in Danish (the plural of 'psyke', the Danish spellling of 'psyche').

If thats true , then in the fictional setting of your game or story just say that the leading scientist that discovered humanity was capable of psionics and psychic powers was Danish.

He was the pioneer that showed provable and repeatable results of Psionic training to the world. As a result, the term ' Psyker ' became the accepted slang term for people with these capabilities.

Blackhand

When you say it or use it (the word 'psyker'), unless you are a certain kind of Northman, will have heavy connotations to GW IP.

For gamers, I mean.  Maybe not the Legalese.

It would be like if I published a game and used the term "Sand People".

Those are real words in English.  They have severe IP connotations that will be drawn by my target audience, however.  Because everyone has seen Star Wars.

Most gamers know enough about GW to hate them.  Including some of their most used terminologies.

Novastar

You could always use the more traditional "psychic", instead of "psyker".
