This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Poll: Are you a D20 Fan?

Yes.

I like D&D, but I am burned out on it.

But in many ways, D&D underplayed some of the stronger features of the system, and many post D&D games are ultimately better than D&D AFAIAC.
The Secret Volcano Base: my intermittently updated RPG blog.

Running: Pathfinder Scarred Lands, Mutants & Masterminds, Masks, Starfinder, Bulldogs!
Playing: Sigh. Nothing.
Planning: Some Cyberpunk thing, system TBD.

Yes.

I think it's also a sense that if people spend their money/time on the competition and not on what you like, they're hurting you somehow. Which to various degrees, they are.

E.g. if only more of you sots had watched Andy Richter Controls the Universe, it might still be on the air and I'd be enjoying it.

Where's the "I like d20 but don't inhale the pipe smoke" category ?

Ironically, I used to be a d20 fan. I was quite a vocal proponent when the whole OGL thing was new. Since then, despite having an affection for open-source things on general principle, I've come to realize that I don't care for the system itself and that it's unsuited for much outside of D&D.

And while it's doubtless the best system for D&D to date, my feelings for D&D itself are lukewarm at best. Plus, I don't care for class/level systems in general, which doesn't help. And the increasingly hard-coded assumption of miniature-use is irksome.

No, I am not a fan of d20. I don't like classes and levels.

But why is anyone going to care? Talking about what I like, and why may interest people. Talking about what I dislike? Bah. I'll do it from time to time, but I don't expect anyone to be interested.

Yeah I do. Pretty big fan.

I don't really like the politics behind it, but it's a good system. I stand behind that statement.

There are politics behind d20? How do I discover the Secret d20 Manifesto, do I have to read every fifth word's first letter backwards or something?

You're asking that question despite having been one of the people who gave Ryan Dancey crap over his "you shouldn't use any system but d20" post?

Ryan Dancey behaving like a fucktard has no bearing on the d20 system itself.

Let's do a thought experiment. Imagine that Albert Schweitzer and Pol Pot have both made a nice cup of tea. You turn around, and they swap them around randomly. Can you now tell the difference between the two cups? Aren't there different politics behind those cups of tea? Won't one taste vile to you, and the other delightful?

What are the politics behind the d20 system? Where may I find these in the corebooks?

I mean, I know it's a class-based system, but...

Now you're just goalpost shifting.  More bad faith communication on your part.

Stuff like Ryan Dancey's post, or this very thread and Pundit's coattail hanging, are definitely political in nature, as is the motivation behind the OGL itself.

I tend to agree. I've gotten much more mileage out of products that built on D&D (e.g., Castles & Crusades, Legends of the Samurai, and Northern Crown) than I have out of actual D&D products.

Once again, the ONLY motivation behind starting this poll is that when I told Walker that he should expect most people to not support his D20-hate around here because the majority of this site are D20 fans, pierce came along and tried to claim that most people on this site actually aren't D20 fans.

Of course, I'd never actually done a poll before, so for all I know he might be right; but I just don't find that very likely.  Anyways, we'll see now. I had just taken it for granted that most of the people here were fans of D20 who wouldn't feel too much sympathy for Walker's Anti-d20 position.
