Fast Mongoose Traveller Rules Question

I just strated a 2e Mongoose Traveller game.  Although it seems great, one criticism I have of the core rules is a lack of index.  Thus, sometimes I have trouble referencing rules.

What is the "Effect" of a check?

Ex: p 78.  "First Aid:  Applying first aid restores a number of characteristic points equal to the Effect of the Medic check."

Does that mean a standard check is 8+.  If you get a 9 you restore 1 characteristic point restored , a 10 for 2 char pts, 11 for 3, etc.?
or
9-11 +1 char. restored , 12-14 +2 char restored like the table that refers to attribute modifiers?
or something else.

Thanks.

I don't have 2e, but in 1e, it's explained in the Skills and Tasks section.

QuoteIf the degree of success is important, then subtract 8 from the
total of the dice roll plus Dice Modifiers. This margin of success is
referred to as the Effect. For example, if a player rolls a 4 and 3, and
has a +3 DM for a total of 10, then his Effect is 10 - 8 = 2.

So basically whatever the roll + DM was minus 8.

In 2nd Edition, the difficulty of a task is the number you need to roll equal to or higher (for a success). Subtract the difficulty from the roll to get the effect. Add the effect to your characteristic. Update your characteristic modifier whenever a characteristic gets changed.

I also have edition 1, my first aid under medic says the patient regains lost characteristic points equal to the Effect. Anything over 8+ is the Effect.
