This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

How many of us are wargamers?

"Wargamer" for the sake of discussion is anything from Diplomacy to Risk to Stratego to Avalon Hill to SPI to any of a myriad of miniatures wargames.

By "Wargamer" let's assume I mean "played more than once or twice and like them," just for the sake of discussion.

I have some hypotheses about "unstated expectations," you see.

(No, I don't thing wargamers are more "macho."  A bunch of pudgy guys pushing little tanks around a ping pong table is about as far from "macho" as you can get and still have Y chromosomes involved.)
I will try any wargame, and there are many I like.
My name is Ramón Nogueras. Running now Vampire: the Masquerade (Giovanni Chronicles IV for just 3 players), and itching to resume my Call of Cthulhu campaign (The Sense of the Sleight-of-Hand Man).

Inconceivable!

Quote from: RPGPundit;747141That seems potentially possible, as a theory.  I don't know just how influential it is in practice.  I mean, that's a bit like saying that if you're a wargamer who also likes RPGs you might think of your chits as real people...

March 2013 at GaryCon V, I played in a WW2 miniatures game where my personal force consisted of one T34/76 tank.  I was "Tail End Ivan" in the platoon.

My platoon leader came under fire and buttoned up.  Being Russian tanks, we had no radio.  My platoon leader and #2 came under fire from behind a woods on the right.

At a point like that, the line between "What would standard Soviet doctrine tell my tank commander at this point" and "What does my character do" is very, very porous indeed.
You should go to GaryCon.  Period.

The rules can\'t cure stupid, and the rules can\'t cure asshole.

Not if you flip the table in a rage before the other guy wins.

I begin to see where you are getting at...
Swords & Wizardry & Manga ... oh my.
(Beware. This is a Kickstarter link.)

I used to play a lot of Axis & Allies and similar games. No time now. I did get to play Dust the board game. That was pretty cool with mech units.
