This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

But is it D&D?

Quote from: AlnagBut my main issue is, what constitutes D&D or any other game.
1) just rules (is SRD also D&D? What about d20 system?)
2) just setting, fluff, tone, problems (are D&D clones also D&D?; what about D&D novels?)
3) rules + its application (the dice question)
4) all of the above (otherwise is not a complete game...)

etc.

Definitely number 4.
D&D is a sum of all its parts. The rules, the applied setting, and rolling dice. Remove any one of these elements. Its something close to D&D but its not. MERP is close to D&D but is not. Why cause the rules. Now lets look at D20 Modern. Its shares #1 and #3 from the list. And depending on the campaign a few elements from #2 even. But is not D&D. It is the D&D rules shoehorned into a different type of setting. The application of which is different because of the possible settings. Not to mention rules added onto to fix problems not addressed in the original genre. Like for instance, automatic weapons. So are their a lot of things that are close to D&D yes. But there is only one. (Well sort of. Basic, RC, 3.0, 3.5, AD&D, AD&D 2nd. They are all D&D.)
