Against plate armor AC, my 4th-level 'AD&D' fighter does an average of 120 points of damage in the first two rounds. That's like failing all your saves against four lightning bolts from Zeus.

It doesn't make much difference when it's mostly overkill, but how about those high-HP monsters? The thing there is that this guy has only 39 HP himself.

Then there are the M-Us, with a spell-point system that lets a 5th-level bard (2E style) cast more spells in a day than a 20th-level wizard by the standard rules.

Plus we've got loot enough in gems probably to buy a small country.

It's crazy, man. Anyone have experience with this sort of thing?
And we are here as on a darkling plain  ~ Swept with confused alarms of struggle and flight, ~ Where ignorant armies clash by night.

I recall someone building a temple out of gold and living dwarves held in magical statis (but still conscious and fully aware that the only way to climb the steps in to the temple was to put your feet in to their screaming mouths). It was, needless to say, a Temple of Chaos.

At higher levels, the numbers begin to numb the brain. On character had 32,000 hit points, and when he was cut in half by a monofilament wire (and killed instantly, but raised automatically by his magic items), he didn't even break stride.

And it's not just AD&D. I recall a (Chivalry & Sorcery) 1st level Priest of Odin who could kick a Nazgul to death with his bare feet in about half a turn.

Can't say that I have to such an extent, no (closest I came to that was playing with 23rd+ characters in AD&D with my bard and playing a Runelord of Humakt in RuneQuest but these were tough, tough games we were playing. Not a piece of cake to survive). Honest question: where is the challenge in the game? What makes it fun to play for you and your buddies?

It's definitely not my cup of tea, and I think most of the buddies are getting bored.

I don't think they would have a problem with the give-away if there were more of a plot line -- these are not 'sandbox' enthusiasts. Just wandering around whacking monsters gets old, and so do shopping trips.

I had a very different experience with AD&D.  (Deprived gamer childhood?  :))  How do you even reach that point in the first place?  Seriously, I don't know how its accomplished mechanically.

Time to buy said "small country" and become your very own Invincible Overlord.  Congratulations!  You "won Dungeons & Dragons...and it was Advanced!" :D

All kidding aside, yeah, I was in a couple of Monty Hauls, mostly during high school.  Of particular (puerile) note was my Al-Qadim psionicist, who psi-charmed the balloon pants off a marid.  His reward: he became the marid's consort and lived with her at the bottom of the sea, along with all the wealth that entailed.  The DM informed me that my character was developing marid-like powers and qualities to boot!

Not bad for low level

In Middle School, when the Deities and Demigods book first came out, we had what we called the God Wars. Someone got the idea that if you killed a demigod, you became a demigod and whatever level of god you killed, you then became. So, everyone suddenly had Player Character Gods and nothing was fun anymore except PvP style play.

Never had a desire for Monty Haul style play after that.
"Meh."
