This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

OSR, ADnD2e Tokusatsu?
« on: November 14, 2022, 06:19:42 PM »
Like the tin says, I'm searching for a Tokusatsu game with those mechanics.

For those not in the know Tokusatsu is live action, Power Rangers, Ultraman, Guyver but not only those, it can also be Magical Girls.

I know about the PF Anime SRD, not what I want, neither is BESM, Open Anime or the Anime/Mecha Hack, SWADE Anime or the ones based on Fate or worst PbtA.

Well, I'll make my own with black jack and hookers.

Magical Hero
You led a normal and boring life until the day that strange cat/weasel/owl/red panda/fox decided you were it’s person. Everything changed overnight, now you are charged with protecting family, friends and mankind from the forces of evil with the help of your magical pet.

Wielding an artifact that grants you strange and weird powers, you transform into the protector of everything that’s good.

Limit Break!: Once per day you can push yourself beyond your limits, by focusing for one round you regain temporary hit points equal to 1d6 + your level and a temporary boost of cummulative +2 to one attribute or power. This will leave you exhausted and unable to fight until you have recovered.

The reason nobody responded to your post is simple.  I don’t think the game you requested exists.

AD&D-2E is a niche market.  The number of OSR games based on that set of rules are very few.  In fact, I can’t think of any other game except Gold and Glory.  G&G is considered the only real 2E clone out on the inter-webs.

You want a niche Japanese’s anime setting as well?   Here is where we run into the problem.  You’re probably going to be more successful if you do write it yourself.

I’m glad for you if you like the top selling game of the genre.  Me, I like the road less travelled, and will be the player asking we try a game you’ve never heard of.

Isnt 3D&T made for this? Defensores de Tóquio?

Also d20m can handle it to some degree. Especially if modify say the Mecha Crusade rules. Not (L)OSR but it works, kinda, sorta.

TSR's Marvel Superheroes can certainly handle it. But isnt D&D.

Closest might get is to do it as just enchanted armours and weapons. Which is pretty much what like 50% of these shows are and the rest practically are with how they function.

A friend of mine did a one off adaption of the Garo TV series via 5e with little effort and worked pretty well.

4e Gamma Wold can be another source fr how to do things like power armour and cybernetics within the mostly 2e system that edition is based around.

Well, I failed at expresing myself then, I meant OSR up to AD&D2e.

Yes, lots of games do it, are any of those OSR? As in Old School D&D based?

Basic D&D is much more common OSR games.

If you want Mecha and magical girls you can use a White Box style game called White Star: Galaxy Edition.

https://www.drivethrurpg.com/m/product/222119

The Galaxy Edition includes both Transformer style sentient robots, and Mecha Pilots who pilot a bot from inside it.  The Magical Girls also exist, but are in an expansion called Star Sailors.

And before you ask, yes, the original intent of the game was to be an OSR Star Wars game copycat.  However, the newer Galaxy Edition adds a lot of other stuff from lots of famous sci-fi settings like Star Trek and even Doctor Who.

Now, that's something I had overlooked (Galaxy Edition) and didn't knew existed (Star Sailors) Thanks!
