This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Open source DTP software

Last night after too many vodka and Red Bulls, I came up with what I thought was a dynamite idea for a short PDF for d20

My wife has not yet talked me out of it so I'm going to do it

I don't want to drop 500 quid on a copy of Pagemaker, so can someone recommend something Open Source that'll do simple layout, bookmarking etc and save as PDF.

I use Open Office Writer extensively, but I haven't tried the layout functionality yet.  Does anyone know what it's like? As I used a Microsoft platform, have Open Office got their Save As PDF function working yet?

Yes, Export As pdf works fine in Open Office, I've used it many times myself.

Openoffice -> PDF works nicely for free. The current version offers less options but does export. Ghostscript and related software is also an option if you want more PDF features but is definately more geeky. Even more geeky is starting out with something like LaTeX to PDF.

As an example, check out Basic Fantasy, an excellent d20 based adaptation of Basic D&D that's free with all documents available in both PDF and OpenOffice format.

IIRC, OSRIC, AD&D1E in all but name, is also done via OpenOffice, or at least early versions were.

Also check out Scribus. If you're on a Windows machine it's slightly more of a PITA to install but it is free.
