This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Only fascists have intelligence as part of their game design.

Quote from: mightybrain;1099872The latest article on D&D Beyond goes further and claims all race ability modifiers are racist:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/563-reimagining-racial-ability-scores

He doesn't even seem to grasp the (not that subtle) mathematics that if you inflate abilities for everyone then not getting a bonus is the same as getting a penalty.

He cites this article to back his nonsense:
https://jamesmendezhodes.com/blog/2019/1/13/orcs-britons-and-the-martial-race-myth-part-i-a-species-built-for-racial-terror

Which is also twaddle.

Racism has nothing to do with the different abilities of a race. The races are just a way to inject a bit of variety into the fantasy world. He's not even internally consistent since he's perfectly happy for races to have their iconic special senses like dark vision, or resistances like poison or charm.

Tolkien made an unfortunate choice when he chose to call Elves, Dwarfs, Hobbits, Welshmen etc. races. They are different species. They are better and worse than humans and the games have to take that into account.

I think that the reasoning behind the article (the implied racism) is foolish, but I do like the idea of ability modifiers for class and background. Still, his choices are a little weird (cleric adds points to strength, dexterity, and/or wisdom... dexterity to me seems less cleric-y than charisma, constitution or intelligence).

I didn't need another reason to say FUCK WOTC, but it's nice they keep tossing them out like freebies.

Tolkien wrote for an audience with reading comprehension.

Any of these worthless SJW morons who can't figure out that Elves =/= Humans on their own won't work their head around "race" vs. "species" either. They are willfully confusing the term "race" in RPGs to win political points.

Here's my new rule. SJWs suffer -2 to WIS and INT, but gain Advantage when virtue signalling.

This isn't WotC, it's D&D Beyond, which is a partner. And it's not even them, per se, it's a blogger on their staff.

Personally I think Tolkien was technically correct* to use race. (He was a language prof. after all.) The rest of society is wrong to use the word race when they really mean nationality. E.g. a human can only be racist towards other races: elves, orcs, and so on.

* The best kind of correct.

But if a species is defined by groups where two individuals can breed, Elves and Humans in Middle Earth could.
The notion of an exclusionary and hostile RPG community is a fever dream of zealots who view all social dynamics through a narrow keyhole of structural oppression.

If only someone would make a game that gave you bonuses for your class and background.

In this post by Completely Normal Guy Blogger, we learn that everything is fascism and all roleplayers (except a tiny vanguard playing Gender Repeal Party) have been doing it wrong all along.

Excuse me, I will be in the other room killing orcs.

Wait till my low fantasy game is published. Original setting has no real classes, only backgrounds that give you bonuses/penalties on stuff you might want to try. It'll be my "totally not Conan" ;) game.

Hey great another "not Conan".  Looking forward to adding that to the "Conan vs Conan Vs Conan vs Conan" thread.

I'm hoping it'll be the definitive Pulp S&W. Who knows, you might even like it!

They didn't do what I wanted. I want a game that isn't dense with fiddly shit, doesn't require a glossary for a bunch of keywords (I prefer plain language over keywords), and is optimally played TotM. PF2 fails on all of these. They may have gotten one thing right, but that doesn't make up for their bullshit.
