This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

One opinion of the OSR

Nevermind.

My problem with "OSR" ?

Just call them games ! For pity's sake !!
 Why one more damn acronym?

They're just Role playing games.

If anything I'd nickname them "trad" for traditional, or 'basic' for basic RPG style.

Quote from: RPGObjects_chuck;322858Never mind that this "name" is someone taking the first three letters of OSRIC and changing what the R meant, effectively adopting the name of the flagship product as shorthand.

That's actually not how "OSR" was derived.

Akrasia

Quote from: Zulgyan;323154...And don't have much more to add, cause Akrasia explained everything very well in this and other posts, but RPGPundit has ignored most of Akrasia's "truth bullet points" about the OSR...

Thanks for the kind words, Zulgyan, and good to see you wasting time here again! :hatsoff:

I think "egocentrically labile" is more fitting than "gonzo".

When Pundit is disinterested, he makes intellligent and often witty posts.

The moment his ego becomes involved, however tangentially, no extreme of hysterical  aggrandisement or juvenile self-justification is off limits.

The "alpha male belly" post is a moment of internet history I will never forget.

Quote from: Age of Fable;323180Yes, that's it...give in to your anger...3d6 in order...

That's the thing... I expected more anger... more territoriality.

I'm not finding any of that, or any pretentiousness either.

But then, I'm only hanging at one forum, maybe I found the good one and there's a old-school forum where everyone is dicks ;)

Nope, we're pretty much the angriest, most territorial, and most pretentious group of AD&D fans on the planet. The positive reaction is probably due to coming in with a positive attitude rather than a chip on your shoulder like you're going to prove some point or teach us something (usually about some later edition of D&D). That sort of approach tends to bring out our bad side ;)

Quote from: Philotomy Jurament;323167You should change your avatar to Hunter Thompson (find one of the pipe smoking pics, instead of the cigarette pics).

For the first year of its existence, my Blog's avatar was HST, smoking a pipe.

Later, I had a contest to determine the new avatar, and the winner was Mark Twain.

Here on theRPGsite, my avatar has always been Bill the Butcher, and it will probably stay that way for the forseeable future.

Captain Rufus

Well, there are some old school fans who are obnoxious prats who make everyone else look bad.

OMG OLD SCHOOL FANS ARE... PEOPLE!

There are dickheads in every interest and activity on the planet.  The only problem is when you let these dummies ruin it for everyone.

See the Furries and Anime fans for examples of what happens when you don't put the kibosh on the stupid, the icky, and the unclean.

For a lesser example look at RPGnet.  Generally nice well meaning people who have encouraged so much stupidity that its sort of turned the place into a joke amongst the RPG playing crowd that is actually aware of the site's existence.

(No shit.  Its an Internet site.  Doesn't really affect the real world of RPGs.)

Nobody gave a proper "bitch PLEASE" when morons like Kurt and the Tangency Morals Brigade (Making even left leaning folks turn into righties since whenever Tangency opened up) got going, or when the RPG section turned into a den of new edition worshipping consumer whoredom (which also infests Other Games) and apparent worship of games nobody but them gives a fuck about.  (Not that these games may be bad mind you.  Just that nobody in the real world CARES)

See that's why on RPGnet you now have people who do not say they are male or female, but that they IDENTIFY AS GENDER X.

This is stupid.  This is what happens when you do not put the kibosh on stupid people.  You do not have to be cruel or harsh.  Contrary to years of incorrect thinking Marine Boot Camp DIs or Gordon Ramsay's fits on Hell's Kitchen don't actually get people to correct their incorrect behavior.  It in fact just empowers them to be more stupid.

(See furries again.  They all but get off on the persecution of their freaky shit since most people just gave them hell instead of trying to respectfully explain why they needed to seek mental help or get out of the goddamned house once in a while.)

As an aside, have we reached the point where we need a "Godwin's law" for furry references?

I'm starting to feel like this analogy has become a reductio ad pellicium fallacy among gamers.
