This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Not getting the vibe.

Right, where did this idea that games that emphasise the story are lesser than those that take a more (for want of a better word) Gygaxian approach spring from?  Because this site has just left me cold for the past couple of months.

It started when there seemed to be a groupthink that unless a game was based upon a twenty+ year old system then it was a swine game designed to emulate chick flicks and rom coms and worthy only of the inverted snobbery one finds in working class politics.

So what happened?

It's a reaction to the vibe that games that emphasize the story are greater than those that take a more (for want of a better word) Gygaxian approach.

It's simple, really.

What happened is that a lot of people who feel completely satisfied with the Old Ways discovered a place where they aren't considered fossils.  People being people, it became easier for some folks to vent their spleen about the Young Whippersnapper approach when surrounded by the likeminded.

Pretty much gotta blame the misguided jerks on this one. You gotta admit it's not far to get from a simple and understandable "I'm having so much more fun playing my game!" to an arrogant and offensive "You're having so much less fun playing yours!"

A lack of moderation doesn\'t mean saying every asshole thing that pops into your head.

Although Jeff is basically right, I think there´s somthing he´s missing:

The whippersnapper approach really is not an approach.
Because a new approach is a new way to reach the same goal.

Whereas I´d postulate that the "whippersnapper" contribution is a fundamental change of goals.

When people do not share goals, they can hardly communicate.

Sharing goals makes it possible to praise certain games, modules and adventures here, that get no love at other places. Anyone coming to such discussions with different goals means loss of the basic ability to communicate.
Especially when they assume there goal is everyone elses too.

Bit like Ron Edwards infamous "Brain damage" moment then.

Except that Brain Damage, when you read it, requires no inference.  It's not an implied "your game is so much less fun." It's an assertion that certain games literally caused Brain Damage to people who wanted to find collaborative storytelling.  I just read it again to see if I was missing something or such..and...well..unfotunately...no...

Right now I'm running Castles & Crusades.  I'd totally play sm Dread, though.

So the whole 'storygames > old-school' and vice-versa, to me, is so much wankery.

It's funny to me, that despite all the caterwauling certain indivuduals do about "mainstream play", the one thing no one seems to get is that all this arbitrary box drawing is about as un-"mainstream" as you can get.

The vast majority of players are far more fluid and fickle in their tastes and methods than the typical Internet partisan type.

I've been saying this like forever....even though I'm probably viewed as one of those partisan types.
