While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). Norse Dragonships!
« on: November 18, 2020, 06:35:26 PM »
Greetings!

The party have recently fought through a dungeon, and the mountain fortress of a powerful Jarl.

They have gained an enchanted Dragonship! The group gained fine booty and rich plunder from their adventure, including a huge, enchanted Dragonship! The Dragonship has an animated dragonhead that bites and chews, and breathes fire. The dragonship's sail when raised up the masthead, flickers with traces of lightning, and peels of thunder echo amidst the skies overhead. When standing amidst the ship, music is heard all about.

What kind of powers and attributes might such a majestic dragonship possess?

I have an interesting online campaign going where the players are Viking Raiders who are embarked on an extended summer raid into the Great Inland Sea. So far they have recruited three Dragons and have started exploring a forgotten Elven City. It is going pretty good.

Some resources for you... My Galleys and Longships reference PDF for my players. You might find this useful...

Blackmoor grew from a single Castle to include, first, several adjacent Castles (with the forces of Evil lying just off the edge of the world to an entire Northern Province of the Castle and Crusade Society's Great Kingdom.

Greetings!

SKOL! GameDaddy! These are awesome!

Thank you! You are very generous and kind!

What kind of characters do your players have in your Norse campaign? What the hell is not to like about going Viking and raiding the civilized lands, heh?

Have you found that there is a different tone and tempo to such a campaign? It seems to me that there are definitely some different dynamics going on, you know?

How long has your Norse campaign been going on? Do the players perceive a different dynamic in the campaign?

Where I am at there is rolling farmland, and then snow-capped mountains and forests. The skies are gray, rain is falling now, periodic snow, with the northern winds blowing colder for sure! I can hear the raven's cry! ;D The onset of winter here definitely gets me into a dark ages, barbarian mood!

Off the top of my head ....

When ramming, the ship uses a breath weapon to set fire to the enemy ship.  It will also continuously chew on the ship for additional damage after ramming.

Navigate fierce seas.  (Like the epic opening bit from Kubo and the Two Strings where Kubo's mom splits a hundred foot wave in half.)

Control weather.  Create fog for a stealthy attack.  Call a gale to sink enemies.  Call a blizzard to encourage enemies to stay indoors when you're attacking their town.  Create following winds for swift travel.

Summon the ghosts of crew who died onboard to help man or defend the ship in an emergency.

Maybe some kind or berzerk effect for the crew.

Fear effects on enemies.

All of these are powered by feeding live enemies to the ship.

If the captain (or sailor with the highest valor), cries out in the top of his voice:

[Name of Ship], hear my cry
I call on you, and the souls of all my kin
Take us home (or to safe harbor?)

The ship will inerrantly turn towards the destination.
-The world grew old and the Dwarves failed and the days of Durin’s race were ended.

Very nice!  Now I feel like I should compose verse for my suggestions as well.  Unfortunately, I'm entirely too lazy to do that.

I love that, my friend! The imagery of the Dragonhead chewing enemy ships, or warriors, that is just cool, you know?

Feeding live enemies to the ship, yeah baby! That definitely evokes some Viking feels, huh?

Fucking brutal! ;D

Sailing the seas of fate.

Either across worlds, or to different parts of the same world, a raider that could literally vanish into the fogs and breaking waters would be scary.
