This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

I'm just disappointed. I read the title of the thread as "New 'Shadow Dark Western' reaches Kickstarter" and thought they were making a wild west game.
Playing: Mongoose Traveller 2e
Running: On Hiatus
Planning: Too many things, and I should probably commit to one.

LOL.  Given enough time and the license for third party products, I see this as an inevitability.   :)

Yup. There are already 3rd party post-apocalyptic and sci-fi settings for Shadowdark. A wild west game is only a matter of time.

My Little ShadowPony is probably more than just a fever dream as well...   'Effin furries ruin everything!  :)

The Scrying Dutchman is making a modern warfare supplement for Shadowdark as we type this. It also is being funded by Kickstarter money.  Currently sitting at about $8000 out of $2000 asked.

It's called Blacklight.

I'm glad for you if you like the top selling game of the genre.  Me, I like the road less travelled, and will be the player asking we try a game you've never heard of.

BTW, Kelsey held a 2+ hour Ask Me Anything video on YouTube regarding her new Kickstarter.  Someone asked about printing costs, and Kelsey said she wants to print all Shadowdark materials in the USA, because she supports her country.  That was nice to hear.

Admittedly, I've been out of the printing business for 5+ years now. But even in the US, the problem where I worked was paper mills. Companies made more money converting their mills to produce toilet paper and feminine hygiene products. I don't know if that burden has been mitigated somehow. So printing in the US may not be the flex that is wanted.

With a pry bar and enough duck tape, everything is compatible with Lion & Dragon.

So I haven't looked at the KS for a bit and it crossed the $2 mil mark sometime this week.   With three days left to go, I wonder if it'll follow the reverse bell curve trend for very successful crowdfunders where the last 48 hours are roughly on par with the first 48.

Quote from: weirdguy564 on March 14, 2025, 12:39:50 AMAll the current classes are free over at the online character creator, Shadowdarklings.

I don't need this new book it seems.

So looking at the previews she provided. While the Basilisk Warrior and Roustabout are new, things like the Bard and Ranger already existed. They don't even have all the stuff from the previews. Missing the Delver and Wyrdling from the Cursed Scroll #5 preview, and the Duelist from the #6 preview or the Kyzian Archer from the Player book for the Western Reaches. But even with those, there will be several other classes in the book itself. But those will likely find their way to Shadowdarklings too.

I would imagine outside of classes it's mostly if you want the tools she adds in the new books at your fingertips. This is useful for people who don't have those already, less so for someone seasoned.

Gooberguh

Well. To my surprise she actually beat the original Kickstarter total by $1 million. I don't follow every kickstarter around, is it uncommon for supplements/expansions to games to overtake their original crowdfunding?

RNGm

It's an impressive feat.  It was a fairly common sense assumption to make that the first kickstarter (already a massive success for a relatively unknown creator on a completely new game) benefited hugely from the OGL debacle as free publicity and a way to stick it to WOTC at the time (though there were plenty of other legitimate reasons as well).   The true test was always going to be whether a supplement(s) could achieve the success of the original as a mark of true excitement in the wider gaming community based on the initially released product itself and this one surpassed it by far.  Kudos and congrats to Kelsey.   OSRish stuff isn't really my thing personally and I didn't back either but I'm excited to have another game alternative continue to be successful.

weirdguy564

Congrats to Kelsie.  I'm sure she will make a good game.  Shadowdark is a decent RPG at its core.

I'm hoping that the classes in this expansion help fill out the classic fantasy tropes the SD hasn't catered to so far.
