This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Needed: Mad flute playing for CoC!
« on: April 14, 2006, 03:36:11 PM »
(cross-posted to NTL)

For my CoC game, I need some fluting noises to represent (more or less) the servitors of the outer gods and their mad flute playing.

Anyone have any good suggestions or files I could snag?  I'm going to play it from my laptop during the session unannounced and freak out my players.

Sure...don't know how mad he is, but he's the only flute player who's name I can remember...mainly because of his commercials on TV a number of years ago. Keep in mind, the type of flute he plays is the Pan Flute.

Japanese flute music. Check out samples here.  Sounds a bit like an elk with their nuts caught in bicycle spokes. Moaning, sad, and full of pain.  They have sort of an alien to NA ears sense to them. If you were able to use some primative editting to rearrange bits of those tracks even more I think you could reallly capture a total madness feel.

Thanks, Blakkie!  I'll listen to those at home.  Samples may be all I need.

You could always sample from some Jethro Tull songs...

The music turned out AWESOME.

In Call of Cthulhu, I love throwing cheap shots at my players. One of the ways they've known bad crap will happen is that they hear, somewhere in their heads, insane piping.

This was the campaign send-off, and I wanted to give them something to remember.

I prepared the mp3 as above then prefaced it with 3 minutes of silence. Right when the tension was getting high - when they were in a place they definitely didn't want to be in - I ran off to the computer in my room, cranked the volume, and pushed play. I killed some time spooking them out and when I heard it, I had their tour guide (long story) say, "Wait... Listen... there it is now..."

One of the girls almost lost bladder control and my other players just freaked out a bit. It was worth every minute spent preparing it.

From the sounds of things you succeded

Take care Nothingland. You were always one of the most ridiculously good-looking sites on the internets, and the web too. I'll miss you.  -"Derek Zoolander MD" at a site long gone.

LOL :highfive:

The only downside, aside from the drycleaning bills, is that you just set one hell of a bar. But having pulled that off so well I think you have more than a spot of skill and should have lots of confidence.

How big was the resulting file?  It is in the copyright law bad place, but I'd be curious to at least hear your edit. At least without the silence up front. :)

I'm happy to send it over.  I doubt it's a copyright problem since there's pretty much little relation to the original anymore.  Maybe I'm wrong!

Shoot me a line at dwarf74 at gmail and I'll send it over.

When listening to it, imagine it coming from a room somewhere else in the house, a good ways away, echoing down a hallway. :)

Thanks!

It'll have to wait until I'm off work, but I'll send it to anyone who wants it.
