Can it be that far-fetched?  They're re-releasing Gamma World.  They no longer have Star Wars for an IP.  Star Frontiers is a name to attract old-timers and let them build a brand without licensing restrictions.

I'd only wish for that if they use the old rules, or some new rules derived from the old.

I agree.  The 4th edition rules are basically D&D 4.0 the Pen and Paper MMORPG, and since Gama World will be using the same rules its simply going to be Gama World the mmorpg as well.

Too bad

I thought that the old Star Frontiers rules were available freely online.
"Meh."

They are available free online.  But Gamma World and Star Frontiers are two different games.

Of course if WOTC wants to make a new version of Star Frontiers, they can tell the people giving away Star Frontiers for free to stop and revoke their right to do so.

Basically, no it's not. Sure, there are elements that have been inspired by MMORPGs (and more importantly, there are MANY elements of MMORPGs inspired by D&D), but the game doesn't play that way at all. I've played WoW, and I've played every edition of D&D since 1979, and 4e still feels and plays like more like D&D to me than a MMORPG, by a long shot.

The 4e rules seem very well-suited for Gamma World. I'd be interested in seeing WotC do a more mainstream space-opera-ish RPG based on 4e rules, and Star Frontiers would be an obvious choice for the name. Alternity would be, too. I don't see them trying to "adapt" any of the actual game systems to 4e, but using the same races and other default elements might be a good way to tie the games together.

4e definitely has an Old School feel. If you disagree, cool. I won\'t throw any hyperbole out to prove the point.

If 4e is an MMO, then Exalted must be a CCG!

I'd like to see a pulp-SF game just to see WotC expand beyond D&D a bit.  I may not like how they do it, but at least they'll help some people crossover into other genres a bit.
"In a way, the Lands of Dream are far more brutal than the worlds of most mainstream games. All of the games set there have a bittersweetness that I find much harder to take than the ridiculous adolescent posturing of so-called \'grittily realistic\' games. So maybe one reason I like them as a setting is because they are far more like the real world: colourful, crazy, full of strange creatures and people, eternal and yet changing, deeply beautiful and sometimes profoundly bitter."

I'd love to see a Star Frontiers boxed set!   I am unsure about the 4e rules reskinned for SF.  GW makes complete sense because its always had a strong tie to D&D, but SF needs more fluidity than 5x5 squares.

beeber

absolutely not.  the last thing i want is WotC fucking up another game.  get the free stuff online (or the original stuff from ebay) and make your own box set instead.

Agreed, after hearing that they're re-releasing Gamma World as a CCRPG, the last thing I want them to do is touch Star Frontiers.

Cubicle-7(if it's non-FATE), Mongoose (as a Traveller setting guide), Clash, would all be good choices.  WOTC would be an abortion.
Even the the "cutting edge" storygamers for all their talk of narrative, plot, and drama are fucking obsessed with the god damned rules they use. - Estar

If they did a space game, I agree it would probably be Alternity and not Star Frontiers. The same designer of Alternity (Bill Slavicsek) also worked on DnD 4e and Star Wars.

Just wait for the MMOCCRPTSG.

Don't be silly, Star Frontier will be an electronic bar game RPG.

And you'll have to buy the box separately. :p

As someone who really liked the boxed sets back in the day, the setting and art but couldn't get the rules to add up (core set, let alone Knight Hawks and don't get me started on Zebulon's Guide), if a new version added up out of the box, cool. I'd miss Holloway and Elmore's art though. Personally I'd prefer a Star Frontiers for MGT or D6 Legends ala Honor Harrington RPG but that's just me.

Ronin

Well if you liked the setting but didnt grasp or whatever. Follow the link in my signature. You will find the re-mastered books. Which are clearer, and laid out much better. As for Zebs guide. It was really a second edition with out coming out and saying hey this is a 2nd edition. But its easy use with little if any modification to the standard set.

I wont mind seeing a new edition or box set. But I dont like the idea of it being based on 4e. If they just cleaned up and slightly revamped the old rules, that would be the best. But if it has to be another system. I think I would rather see it with another system thats not to heavy. Savage Worlds, BRP, MGT, D6, or something like those. So I guess I'm with you Casey.

Actually follow this link. Less jacking around to find the books.
