This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

So far I have;

Dead Can Dance
Usual Gregorian Chant/Monastery music
Some movie/tv series sound tracks

But curious to know if there is a list or other suggestions...more unusual the better.

*sigh* browser died. it was a pretty post, too.

Anyway, I was asking what sort of limits are there to this request? I recently picked up VtDA myself, along with Veil of Night. Throw in Ebony Kingdoms, KotE, etc. and you can easily play across three continents with a flood of material and inspiration.

Just for example, let's look only at the Ravnos. Anything works from Gipsy Kings to Talvin Singh. I'd recommend some of Talvin Singh's works from the compilation Anokha: Soundz of the Asian Underground if you want a greater mix of less electronic sounding stuff. I'm assuming the Gipsy Kings are well known, but I'll leave a link to their most popular hit.

Gipsy Kings - Bamboleo

Talvin Singh - Distant God (ambient)

Talvin Singh - Jaan (ambient & drum 'n bass)

Or if you tempt me, I can show you somethings more unusual. For example, Azis doing a cover of Churulike. He's a Bulgarian Rom shock pop star doing a cover of a famous Indian song, immortalized in a Bollywood classic.

Azis - Curulike (camera filters, body paint, and press-on nails!)

And that's just Ravnos. I need more restrictions or I'll be all over the place! :)

Naturally I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the expected, like Rasputina's Transylvanian Concubine, Cocteau Twins (anything by them, really), and Miranda Sex Garden. Enough swishy goth with actual musicianship to hold over any group.

Rasputina - Transylvanian Concubine (violins!)

Cocteau Twins - Persephone (drums!)

Miranda Sex Garden - Lovely Joan (choral round!)

Let me know locale and how strict the fidelity to period music and I can work from there.

You know, people keep comparing non-TSR D&D to deck-building in Magic: the Gathering. But maybe it's more like Katamari Damacy. You keep sticking shit on your characters until they are big enough to be a star.

Oh, and I can vouch for this CD being most awesome.

"Live the Legend" by New World Renaissance Band

Many levels of cool -- don't let the band's name throw you off, btw.

Jill Tracy and the Malcontents. They did an all-piano score for Nosferatu, among other things.

Oh, and some Arcana if you can find it. Everything they turn out is gloomy and rather period-appropriate to a medieval setting.

I vote for actual middle-ages music. Like this.

I second Arcana (especially Dark Age of Reason) and would add The Soil Bleeds Black (The Knightly Years or Alchemie is a good starting point).

Hell, Medieaval Baebes aren't bad either.

I vote for Elend, dark ambient from France. It is basically classical music for metalheads, I mean a song called Silent Slumber: A God that Breeds Pestilence from an album called Winds Devouring Men?

Always the right answer, innit. With the recent space opera-themed album (Final Frontier), I've even considered using them for a Traveller game. :D

I managed to get hold of a 4 disc limited edition version of Kingdom of Heaven soundtrack which adds a lot more music that was in the film, but period music and not composed by HGW.

I've ordered a couple of Elend CDs and look forward to getting them.

I'm also hunting down the Assassins Creed soundtracks as their music is ripe for Dark Ages.
