Quote from: Mistwell;642623This is reminding me of the board game Junta, where the goal is to be the one corrupt banana republic politician who steals the most foreign aid money for his Swiss bank account before the aid money dries up.
That's right in my wheelhouse.

It's also the sort of thing I'd be likely to turn into a roleplaying game campaign at some point.

Quote from: jcfiala;642543What we should do is go to indiegogo, and set up a campaign to raise money for hookers and blow, and then waste the money on producing a roleplaying game.
I've always wanted to build an RPG game, and see if I could get the national Endowment for the Arts to pay me money to produce it.

The game itself would be a standard RPG (maybe even an OSR retroclone), but the proposal would be written in fluent Tangency-speak, to appeal to the NEA board.

"Combat bigotry by implementing guided, interactive events that offer trans-gender, trans-species, and trans-life experiences. By becoming the Other, the Other is deothered, fostering comity and understanding."

(That's too damn clear, though. I'll have to vague it up.)

And yes, attempting this, much less succeeding, would be something approaching performance art.)

Kickstarter the RPG!!

I got a critical on "save vs. bad publicity"!

This sounds like a fucking blast. Where do I sign up?

Sounds a lot like Major Wesely's Braunstein II quasi-RPG that Dave Arneson famously played before his First Fantasy Campaign. I'll dig a link when I get home.

The actual game play is just so-so.  There are lots of rules, lots of fiddly pieces.  The coup part of the game plays like a wargame, while the rest is a lighthearted diplomacy game.  It can take around 5 hours to play out, and I think a lot of people get discouraged by the clunky aspects of the game.  That's not to say it's a bad game - it definitely was fun, and I have excellent memories of playing the game (often with up to 7 players, which it supported well).  I'm just not sure how well it would hold up these days, with more streamlined, faster-paced Euro-games.

On the plus side, I think Troll and Toad has the original version of the game (with new art) for only $10.

My understanding is there is a new, more modern version of the game, that addresses some of these issues.  But I have not played it.  It is called Junta - Viva El Presidente!  Here is a review of that version:

I also found almost nobody online seems to know how to pronounce the name of the game.  It's pronounced HOON-TAH.  Not JUN-TAH.  Fortunately the review I link to above does pronounce it properly, and I did not feel compelled to reach through my monitor and strangle the reviewer :)

I also found on YouTube several reviews of the original version, and even a three part "How to Play" set of videos.

You know, people keep comparing non-TSR D&D to deck-building in Magic: the Gathering. But maybe it\'s more like Katamari Damacy. You keep sticking shit on your characters until they are big enough to be a star.
