This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Mongoose Traveller

Bought this yesterday, haven't finished reading through it yet.

It's very different to the playtest versions, they plainly took comments received on board.

It looks like Classic, there's more potential careers (in that each career has three sub-careers within it so rather than just being a merchant you're a tramp merchant or corporate merchant or broker), there's more stuff to link a party together but generally the feel is very close to the original.

Combat looks like a tidied version of the original too.

Generally, and to my surprise, I think they got it right.  Further reading may of course change my view, but I think this may some 30 years on be finally the version of Traveller that gets it right.

Character sheet looks ghastly though.

Oh, and this time they got the attribution right, learning from the complaints on MRQ I guess.  They credit all the original Classic Traveller people then separately and beneath that credit the MTrav people.

I heard the layout of the entire book is somewhat 'dated'. Maybe intentionally so to evoke an 70s aesthetic? What do you think of that aspect?

I think they've tried to go for the original aesthetic, for good or ill.

I mean, Mongoose never really kicks ass on layout anyway, so I suspect that's a good decision on them, and some bits still are a bit crappy - for example some art is under some text on the events tables (a really common Mongoose error) which makes it not unreadable or anything but a bit less readable than it could have been.

Me, I'm fine with that aesthetic, most of it is very easy to read because it's plain text on a white background with fluff and mechanics clearly separate.  But then, I'm a grognard.  What a young leet gamer with mad skillz will make of it I leave to others to determine.

At least they didn't put it in large print for us old folk, although I do think on a total aside that in 20 years if not less some rpgs will have large print editions for the oldsters.

Sacrificial Lamb

Is this new Traveller released under the OGL? How much is it like "Classic" Traveller? I've never played the game, so I'm curious...

Koltar

We go two copies of it where I work. Likely I'm going to buy it to help flesh out my NPCs randomly before some game sessions.

The deckplans are almost too "retro" and  outright suck out the wazoo in places (Especially the Empress Marava. Oh You poor girl! What has Mongoose done to you ??) Still prefer the art choices SJ Games made when they did TRAVELLER ship deck plans.

Rest of the book looks prewtty good anmd does feel like 'real" TRAVELLER to me when I look at it.  In my mind now the only real TRAVELLER is going to be classic, GURPS version , and now Mongoose 2008 version. Anyuthing those 3 have in common is automatically canon in my version of the TU.

I'd love to hear how it plays. One of my groups was discussing maybe doing CT sometime this year/next.  If this gives a slightly fresher tone but still keeps the spirit in play I'd love to hear. Thanks.

Intrigued to find an Ohio game store clerk with a British accent, I spontaneously buy twenty GURPS books.

Not yet, and still no solid word on when.

I'm very encouraged to hear that Mongoose may have "gotten Trav right".  I was actually rather pleased with what I saw coming out of their task resolution and combat mechanics in the lead-up to print as of a month ago.
