Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). Mongoose Traveller vs Classic Travller: What's the Difference?

I picked up a copy of Mongoose Traveller not too long ago, and I like the look of it.  But I was wondering, how does it differ from the original?

The book itself mentions that they changed the "survival" role in character creation so that failing it doesn't mean character death, and I assume they might have a different set of standard careers than Classic Traveller does.

Is there anything else?

Dr Rotwang!

Off the top of my head, Mongoose differs from CT in these ways:
  • An explicit, defined task system
  • Attributes provide a calculated bonus to dice throws
  • MGT character generation allows for characters to change careers before play begins, and offers more careers than CT's LBBs did
  • Space combat is easier to grasp
  • CT didn't have that "Cultural Differences" chart
  • MGT has tons more art than the LBBS did, but most of it is UGLEH

One has rabid, die-hard fans who'll defend it to the death (Of a flame-ridden thread).

The other has six potatoes.

Edition wars: Only the names change.
The main problem with government is the difficulty of pressing charges against its directors.

Given a choice of two out of three M&Ms, the human brain subconsciously tries to justify the two M&Ms chosen as being superior to the M&M not chosen.

No, you're not bitter at all over your Pathfinder thread....

Odd thing is, there hasn't been the contentiousness over CT vs RTT like there has been over 3E vs 4E, and I'll leave it up to the reader decide why that is.

Everything Dr Rotwang! has stated is true and I'll just add the following:
  • The careers are set up more like Mercenary, High Guard, Scouts, and Merchant Prince than the previous ones in the LBBs and Citizens of the Imperium.
  • There are no turnover at midpoint algebraic equations for space travel anymore.
  • Space Combat no longer uses the vector movement system.
  • Combat now integrates vehicles in with characters smoothly.
"Meh."

I really don't think the art is that bad. I've seen much worse.

Tahmoh

the newer art is alot better than the earlier stuff, its alot more charecterful than the grainy stuff from the first few printings.

Actually, I am somewhat bitter.

29 pages and almost no useful information on the actual question I asked, just talking lemmings blathering on as if they haven't been repeating themselves for *Three Whole Months!*

I'm talking about both sides, here, BTW.

Me? Bitter? Ya think?

Man, it felt good to let that out.

Although I should note that, looking back, I choose an absolutely *Horrible* way of asking - But I'm used to being blunt.

'Tact', I would say 'Is what you use to stick stuff to walls'.

The first step to getting help is admitting there's a problem.

;)
On weird fantasy: "The Otus/Elmore rule: When adding something new to the campaign, try and imagine how Erol Otus would depict it. If you can, that\'s far enough...it\'s a good idea. If you can picture a Larry Elmore version...it\'s far too mundane and boring, excise immediately." - Kellri, K&K Alehouse

I have a campaign wiki! Check it out!
