This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Mongoose - crappy industry

Quote from: CRKrueger;424204D&D 5.0?

1.) Feats, Prestige Classes, multi-class "dipping" and "cherry-picking", basically anything that leads to the "character build" mentality needs to be removed from D&D, and then subjected to every ritual in Carcosa.

2.) A darker, medieval tone and feel (like the AD&D PHB) instead of the "Pokemon meets WoW" aesthetic would work towards getting us back to the cool, semi-dangerous feel as opposed to the post-modernist, tongue-in-cheek, "aren't we all such geeks to play this game" *wink wink* mentality.

3.) Get designers who aren't going to (self-admittedly) design for ADHD kids and MMOGers.

4.) Bring back an immersive roleplaying focus.  Tactical rpging does not have to use a ridiculous amount of dissociation to be interesting and fun.
I'm not a big fan of D&D in any form but if all this happened I'd at least be willing to give it a go... rather than getting cold sweats and throwing tantrums every time someone mentions wanting to run it.
'Lamentations of the Flame Princess' has been the closest I've come in decades to wanting to play a game in that 'family'.

Quote from: Glazer;424233First off, just to underline, I agree.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that it's all well and good preaching to the choir here on the rpgsite, where there are plenty of people who have come to appreciate the importance of keeping the rules as light as possible.

The difficult bit is selling this idea to existing players who haven't already come to that conclusion. Because if you change things and you aren't ready to keep the existing players onside, then I think you'd be looking at an epic fail.

So, how would you do that? Personally I think this would be much harder than fixing the rules themselves.

All joking aside, I tired to address this in my post. A huge percentage of the player base is going to love/hate the game based upon things that have nothing to do with the game itself. They will be mad because there is a new edition, which many of them will some how believe makes all their current edition stuff obsolete. Many of them will be so mad that they will never give the new game a chance. Another segment will want it just because it's D&D. You can't really plan for these people. As for the segment that insists on rules complexity- you have to decide whether or not catering to them is going to move more units than making the game accessible to  more people.
I don't think it has so far, and I don't think it will.
Somebody is getting left out.
You are posting in a troll thread.

Quote from: CRKrueger;424204P.S. I know I'm not telling you anything you don't know, Pete, but Mongoose's quality control is really shooting you guys in the foot.
*sigh* It has often been frustrating...

QuoteYou should be capitalizing on 4e fatigue.
MRQ2 seems to be a slow burner but its reputation a tight, fun system is starting to spread.

Like many games its popularity relies on vocal fan support and plenty of posting on the forums... but there's a lot of residual Mongoose bashing, primarily based on the dire previous version, but obviously not helped by the foolish decision to rush a couple of books to print.

Lessons are learned however, the fanbase critiques are listened to and efforts made to correct issues. However, as I said before the publication cycle is about five months, so efforts to fix things take a while to surface.

The latest books, Pavis Rises, Vikings and Wraith Recon look pretty tight. Art is more consistent, layout is always improving, and the text much more closely proofed. Hopefully this will set the future trend.

Unfortunately Mongoose has a big stain on its rep which is going to take years to clear, especially when folks take pot shots without even reading the latest version.

In the meantime all I can do is try to make my own books as error free as possible before submission, even if it costs me a few extra hours of sleep each night. ;)

I so want Runequest II and Wraith Recon for RQ (the latter because it is tangentially similar to my SMITE! Setting.)

Sadly I've no budget for gaming at the moment.

Quote from: Aos;424149Therefore, the only logical thing to do is to go after new customers. Jettisoning feats is a huge step in the right direction in that regard.

Agreed.   New blood needs to be the focus.

Quote from: Aos;424149The other thing I would do is hire a crazy minister to link the game to Satan again. Things just haven't been the same since Satan forsook us.

The Christian Right doesn't have the cultural cache anymore.   Instead, D&D should get more celebrity attention, like bikini chicks gaming in a reality show called "Hot Geek Ass".

And currently, such a show would be touted as "women's empowerment" for re-claiming their bodies and men's dice in one fell swoop.

Quote from: Doom;423997I thought that's basically what 4e was?

Gamma World is the Steve Austin 4e: better, smarter, faster.

Quote from: Peregrin;424001IMO, from a design standpoint, Gamma World is a much better game.

I still don't care much for the setting, though.

I'd love to see a less-gonzo, one book setting published for GW.  The new GW can do "less-silly" just fine, and they should sell at least one book to cater to those gamers.

Quote from: Benoist;424174It only is hard to fathom for people who somehow believe that the more rules they got, the better game they have.

Unfortunately, these people are called "most gamers who buy stuff in game stores"

Quote from: jgants;424222The few kinda-cool feats that can actually customize a character in any meaningful way could just as easily be reworked into class feature type things.

Fuck yeah.  I am all about the Sub-Classes who can have their own feature lists.

I have heard this several times and I am confused.   What did Raggi do with LotFP that makes you feel that this retro-whatever will offer a better play experience than any other retro-whatever?

I loved Raggi's Creature Generator so it doesn't surprise me that he would create a different retro-whatever, but I haven't heard exactly what he did that makes the gameplay different and/or better.
