This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Modern horror rpg's; looking for additional settings to mine ideas

Quote from: TrippyHippy;963265Well, it's good if you've found your inspiration. However, the choice of playing psychics and mediums does seem a little against the initial notion of wanting 'no peoplez with powerz'. In fact, I always felt that Beyond the Supernatural was basically an urban fantasy too, but I guess I'm looking at it wrong.

Yeah only for acquiring knowledge. Precognition, postcognition, danger sense, sensing the supernatural, communicating with spirits etc. Nothing really high powered.
May I say that? Yes, I may say that!

The Exploited.

I'd say Spite or Dread from Neoplastic Press. I really like Rafael Chandler's take on evil Angels and Demons.

While the game is not what you'd want per se, as it's technically Urban Fantasy/Splatter Horror. But for the bestiary, it's really worth getting just for the ideas.

Chill 3e is also very very good, great mechanics. I also really like Hunter the Vigil for Chronicles of Darkness + stuff for God Machine. Very cool horror stuff.

Well, to be sure, most of the games mentioned here can be played as such. In Kult, for example, it's pretty much the default that pcs are un-powered by anything beyond their own awareness. Of course the option to research a twelve hour ritual in order to mutate an unborn baby is always there, but....

Quote from: Omega;962984Totally forgot about Beyond the Supernatural. Its actually a great system as its a pre-Rifts pre-Megadamage system and the magic is overall toned down enough to be managable.

The other is Palladium's Nightbane setting. Though that is a rather different take on horror more akin to Vampire.

Yeah, Nightbane never really appealed to me.

I've never really checked out Beyond the Supernatural, but I never really liked Nightbane either...

Sorcerer is a good one for ideas. But it's a kind of a one trick pony (of course that's kinda' the point of the game).

A lot of those games seem to come from the early 2000's. Witchcraft and GURPS Cabal too.

They're radically different games.

Might be worth picking it up just for some ideas in that case... Although, I'm not all that mad about the Palladium system itself.

In Nomine, both SJG & French Croc version (INS/MV), are filled with a grab bag of spiritual powers, agendas, and tricks to keep your NPCs interesting.

Legend of the 5 Rings has a slew of alternate spiritual (pro/an)tagonist takes, especially in its Shadowlands, Spirit/Kami, and Ninja seed material.

I guess I'll go with the obvious second mention of Wraith, & add Geist into the mix.

Those should factionalize spiritual approaches enough so things don't devolve into a static good v. evil, save the world!, routine.

You know, people keep comparing non-TSR D&D to deck-building in Magic: the Gathering. But maybe it\'s more like Katamari Damacy. You keep sticking shit on your characters until they are big enough to be a star.

Well, as some pointed out, BtS doesn't use "mega-damage", which for some reason a lot of people seem to hate (never had a problem with that myself).

Funnily enough, I thought the Mega Damage thing worked well for Rifts. I liked the idea that a guy in hi-tech power armor couldn't be touched by normal sounds or mortar shells, etc. Although, I cocked an eyebrow when even small creatures had mega-damage capacity. I know it was an attempt to balance the game but it felt strange imo.

My real problem with somthing like Rifts was more that it became the go to kitchen sink, but with some really nice ideas at the core but then went on to become some bizare melting pot of every trope imaginable on one tiny planet. Mr. Siembieda needed an editor.

That said, I did buy the Savage Worlds version.
