This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Fun stuff we've seen on RPGnet

I'd use roll under Doom, and maybe a higher starting die.  For example, if it's a d10, that's pretty low chance of failing but...you can still die. In a level based game, it would give PCs a bailout mechanic when they're really squishy. Anyway, it's a cool idea, which I might use in my upcoming BotV campaign. I know they already have Hero Points, but this group is full of crazy daredevils, so it might be fun.

Any way to contact him and invite him over?

Its very similar to the Dark Side point mechanic in WEG D6 Star Wars. Except in Star Wars failure meant turning to the Dark Side which typically turned your PC into an NPC. So not dead, but out of the player's hands as if they were dead.

You could also tweak it by having to roll less than the current number of Doom points to die. So you would get one Doom for free as it were, since you can't roll under 1 on 1d6. (Which is what Star Wars did. You could afford to have 1 Dark Side Point, it was only once you reached 2 that you risked falling to the Dark Side (on a 1 on 1d6).

I looked around for his email, but there's nothing. Maybe if someone over there already knew it.
Battle doesn\'t need a purpose; the battle is its own purpose. You don\'t ask why a plague spreads or a field burns. Don\'t ask why I fight.

Darth Tang posted here a few years ago under another name. Not sure if he's still here or not.

Darth Tang was one of the few reasons why I still lurked at RPGNet.

I would like to see him here.
"Meh."

arminius

Yeah, he has an account here as OneTinSoldier.

Would it be gauche to send him a PM about being more active here, the sort that pings your email too?

Quote from: Bren;831281What do people think of this mechanic? Would you ever use it and if so, when and why?

I think the mechanic is interesting, but I would not use it. I feel that this would cheapen the concept of heroic self-sacrifice in my games, which tends to be an important part based on Actual Play. The actions of the Player should dictate whether or not the PC is doomed, not a die roll afterwards - it seems too deus ex machinae to me.

Quote from: The Butcher;826377No irony or Schadenfreude, please. There's enough of that over at the other threads. :D

I was perusing The Big Purple today and found out about two things that look right up this site's alley. I thought about spinning each into a thread, but then I thought, hey, everyone's always whining about tBP, why not a positive thread for a change?

One: Geoff Grabowski, Mr. Exalted himself, is writing a OSR module called The Dreams of Ruin. Sounds a lot like that old Summerland storygame (apocalypse by way of crazy fertile unchecked plant life swallowing civilization) weaved into a B/X-compatible module.

Two: Someone put up a Named Level Generator. You punch in a class (anything, really) and the generator gives you Gygaxesque names for levels in that class. Sometimes it even throws in Hit Dice! As a dual-classed Laparotomist and Novice Jiujiteiro (3rd level), I had a good laugh with this.

Neat. But I'd rather have a chance to play in one of Jeff's games. Even if it was Traveller.:)

DCC essentially  has high-level title generators in one of its appendices.  At least, in my DCC game any character that reaches 6th level and up gets a new semi-unique title each level thereafter.
