This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Mixing Systems and Settings

How many people here use settings with systems other than the ones for which they were designed?  I'm thinking of stuff like using GURPS with CoC settings/adventures, D&D 3.5 with the Warhammer 'Old World', or HARP with Greyhawk.

I'm contemplating using the Wilderlands box set (as a 'hex crawl' campaign) with either True20 or Rolemaster Classic/2e someday.  When I ran my first 3e D&D campaign 5 years ago, I converted a lot of old ICE MERP stuff for it (these days, I would probably do the opposite).  More recently, I've used a few classic 1e AD&D and BD&D modules with C&C (although given how close C&C is to pre-3e D&D, that's not much of a 'conversion').

That's about it for me.  You experiences?

I, more or less, view all game systems as generic systems.  I tend to rip the setting off, toss it away, and run with whatever homebrew setting I prefer.

I mentioned on my blog the other day that Space Master (at least its 2nd edition) would be perfect for Traveller's setting.  I suspect that's intentional.

If I ever ran a game set in Harn it would be with D&D or possibly Rolemaster.

I've been thinking about adapting Ptolus to Mythus.

Well, I did convert Ravenloft to Tri-Stat d6.

I've had some fun running Forgotten Realms with GURPS 3 in the past.
I'm currently converting the Iron Kingdoms setting to True20.

Stuff I'm contemplating:
Discworld, using Nobilis.
A grittier Iron Kingdoms, using nWoD.
Wilderlands, using either Iron Heroes or a Shadowrun 4/Riddle of Steel mix.
Generic Space Stuff, using either True20, Pendragon or Mutants & Masterinds.

That's a slightly odd one, unless the group is playing the likes of Blind Io or the Lady... You were thinking about reworking the attributes used by the resource management system into something a little more down-to-earth? "Realm" to represent political power, that sort of thing?

Harnworld with Runequest is a no-brainer.

I converted DSA to D6 way back before it was translated into English as The Dark Eye (using only the information in the Realms of Arkania crpg manual).

I actually _was_ thinking about playing Gods, probably Small ones. Actually I just got the book and while reading through it (once again: good writers, but a little unprofessional) Discworld seemed like a good idea to scrape away the pretentiousness. Pratchett is the exact opposite of some other writers, as he's a little deeper than one might think...

Playing the Big D's doesn't interest me as much.

I won't even try to come up with ones myself, as I clearly know that my playes will invent domains that go beyond the ken of the sane mind.

Players are in the habit of doing that, yes. And no matter how innocent that choice might seem to begin with, at some point they are probably going to end up doing something pretty horrible with it.

Give a player a gold piece and he'll be drunk for a day, give him a sword and he'll use it to decapitate the head nun of the orphanage...

I ran the Desert of Desolation series using GURPS. Still have them and they are in great condition, I've since lost all the conversion work. I ran it as a short campaign to introduce some friends of mine to GURPS.
