Title: Mini Six
Post by: danbuter on December 22, 2011, 07:05:18 PM
Does anyone know if anyone has made a superhero version of Mini Six (http://antipaladingames.com/minisix.html)?

I'm working on a fantasy version, but I'd love to see a supers version already completed.

I've not seen any superhero material put out for Mini Six.  If there is anything, it's difficult to find online and not linked on their website.

When you get your fantasy stuff for Mini Six done, make sure you post here so we can take a look.  :)

I never heard of this before. I thought that the D6 system was already fairly simple?

When you start getting into 8d+ pools, the integer math can get onerous for some people.  I ran D6Legend Star Wars for some friends once as an experiment and it was amazing how fast resolving actions went with that mechanic.

It's very well done. Also, the pdf is free, so I recommend checking it out.

I second that recommendation!

It's a shame that there's still a lot of people out there that don't know about Mini Six or other products from OpenD6.  Still, if people will look it over, they may find they like what they see.  :)

Mini Six is very impressive. Probably one of the best free set of rules I never got round to play.

Add my name to the list of those impressed by Mini Six. It is elegant.

Given that I never actually liked the D6 system, I doubt I'd like this one. Or is there a reason why I would?

No, it's the D6 system but for tards.

Ok, I'm kidding...kind of.  It's a simplified version of an already simple system - I guess it's aimed at people who want to get a game of D6 up and running in a matter of a 3 minutes (as opposed to 10 minutes for regular D6).  Below this in complexity would be Risus and then rules-free free form.

Why didn't you like D6?

Yeah, I guess it really depends on what you didn't like about D6.  If you didn't like a certain aspect of it, I'd need to know that aspect to know if it's at all different.

Mini Six is boiled down simplicity.  It offers a very quick, easy to use system, as well as several ideas of settings to game in.  It's more "light" than what you've seen in either the D6 Fantasy, D6 Space or D6 Adventure, or even Star Wars by West End Games.  Same base mechanic, but more elegant in its simplicity.

If that's what you disliked about D6, though, obviously that wouldn't be a draw for you to try it.  If your problem with the system was something else, then perhaps Mini Six would be better because it's simpler than any of the predecessors.

Basically, it just never appealed to me. I just find it mediocre.

Hmmm...hard to say what would change your mind then.  Mediocre is just....plain.  If the plainness was due to lack of setting, then Mini Six is better.  If plainness was due to the way the system worked, well... guess it's just not for you then.

Still, I'd suggest other people look into it!

I can relate. I mean. I never "got" Savage Worlds (though I have Solomon Kane and I love it, specifically).

Isn't that enough to know that sometimes, a game just doesn't click with you and that's "it" ?

Absolutely. I like Savage Worlds and D6 but have a real problem with class/level games.. which I a working on for fantasy but it's still quite deep in me.

I think MiniSix is a great distillation of D6, more than enough there to run all sorts of games.

Pretty much the way I see it. D6 worked well for me in terms of providing intuitive rules, fast play and surprisingly well rounded characters.

That said I've not run much D6 in a while. Partly that's because I've been on an awesome superhero trip that last few years. But also I find that unfortunately D6 suffers from a sort of taint by association.

For obvious reasons the D6 is very strongly associated with Star Wars and let's just say that in my group at least ever since the prequels the franchise has lost it's shine. So as an unintended consequence D6 has also lost it shine.  So even now that I'm running a bit of space opera I'm using Fate-based Bulldogs! instead.

That suggests that Mini Six has a setting?

Mini Six includes five mini-settings in the back:

a standard Fantasy setting.
a 70's cop show setting.
a Firefly clone.
a Victorian magic setting.
a Star Wars clone.

It also has 2 settings for download (free):
a Doctor Who clone.
a Buck Rogers clone.

In fact 3 of the settings floated my boat enough to print the pdf and mull running a one off game with my monthly one-off group.

Which 3?

Hmm. very interesting. But not one of those made me say "yeah, i'd want to run that as d6".

Of course, I've yet to find any setting that would make me say that.

when I took a look at mini six, the appealing aspect was that everything was compiled into a succinct pdf.  If you like D6 and wanted to run it for players not familiar with it, you give them the pdf and they would be up to speed quickly.  Or if you had never played any D6, this would let you know what it's about.  If you don't like D6, you're not likely to care for something 90% the same.
