maxing a stat
tleilaxu:
say a character starts out at 1st level with an 18 in an ability score. over the course of levelling up to 18, they put all 5 point increases into that stat. in addition, manual of stat increase +5 is found or craft. This would make the ability score 28. If a +6 stat booster item is used, it brings the stat up to 34. Is this all kosher as per RAW? Are there any other things I have forgotten which could further boost the statistic?

There is no upper limit to what you can have as a stat. ONe thing you need to think about is different types of bonuses. Since most magic items provide a enhancement bonus to stats. You also have inherent like the tomes of stat increase and sacred or profane are really the only ones taht apply to stat increases.
Dacke:
The Spell Compendium has owl's insight, a 5th level druid spell which grants an insight bonus equal to half caster level to Wisdom. Only lasts an hour, though.
Ottomsoh the Elderly:
By default, 36 is the best you can go at 20th level (start with a +2 racial adjustment, roll an 18, put all your stat increase there, find a +5 tome/manual or a lot of wish scrolls, and grab a +6 item).
However you can go farther with the proper choices. For example, a half-orc barbarian 9/sorcerer 1/dragon disciple 10 can have 44 Strength this way, raising to 48 when raging.
And of course there's polymorph. Dire bears and fire giants are popular choices for Strength-boosting purposes.
Raising your wisdom to ridiculously high levels is much harder, on the other hand.

Actually, it's useful for clerics, druids, paladins, rangers, and other divine spellcasters. It was also useful to psions-seers before the revision...
