This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

lmao

They're usually full of illiterate spam. Every now and then you get the rare community where the YTer has cultivated a sensible comment section, but almost all the time it's just white noise instead. I'm there for the video, not for the commenters.
Battle doesn't need a purpose; the battle is its own purpose. You don't ask why a plague spreads or a field burns. Don't ask why I fight.

Someone turning off comments isn't unusual and should hardly be controversial.
It's not uncommon when talking about corporate YouTube channels. Not sure what Luke Gygax is trying to sell though (or is he doing this for WotC).

But turning comments off isn't controversial as much as it's a bitch move. Only done when you know that your content is going to get you roasted. It's like pre-admitting defeat and, as such, deserves to be mocked.

Or if you don't want to give a platform to the idiots that inevitably infest such comments.

Of course not.

However, the comments on videos in particular are notorious for being cesspools of humanity. Why enable them? Let them vent their filth elsewhere.

Some channels have comments up, some don't. I think some are better suited to ongoing discussions than others. Shows like this do tend to invite more of the negative drive by variety. I can understand not wanting to have to even think about comment. I will say though, youtube comments are easier to ignore than blog, facebook or twitter comments. My podcast goes up automatically on youtube, and I used to do youtube videos. I still occasionally get comments. But I am not even aware of them till months or years later. They can be strange sometimes for sure (to this day my most hostile and angry comments were for a video I did on DVD region codes----which still kind of makes me laugh).

Comments are often the best part of a video. If the video suxxors, then the much deserved smackdown comments might provide some LOLZ. If its a good video, its fun to see people bounce off their thoughts and appreciation for the good work.

Agreed.

Whenever I see comments off, I suspect its out of fear and inflated egos who can't handle even the thought of anything but worship so I drop an auto-thumbs down.

Which confuses me here. Don't these "D&D luminaries" have huge followings of sychophants? Allegedly these clowns have a gazillion fans so I'm confused why they wouldn't shower the video with fee-fees and hugs.

I agree. YT comments have become a playground for every sociopath out there.

QFT.  Give me Youtube comments over Twits Twittering or Reddit.
Your Forgotten Realms was my first The Last Jedi.

If the party is gonna die, they want to be riding and blasting/hacking away at a separate one of Tiamat's heads as she plummets towards earth with broken wings while Solars and Planars sing.

Why? Because of engagement. Not only will comments trigger YouTube's algorithms and cause it to recommend your video more but it's also a way to create a community by interacting with your subs.

This video has been up for a few days already and, even with names like Gygax, Mercer and Coleville, only has 75 views. At that point there's really nothing to lose since you can just delete any nasty comments easily enough.

I believe they turned that part of the algorithm off last year.

The only reason to do a show like this with people who hate your father, your family, and the game he created is to try to convince some of their fans that what old-school D&D has to offer is better than what they know so far.  If he did it for any other reason, like to try to placate these cunts who all but declared his father a Nazi, then he's lost his way.
