Quote from: RPGPundit;1073269Apparently, you shut down your channel?

I did shut down my channel due to making the mistake of calling out Varg Vikernes on his bullshit in a previous video.

Long story short, some of Varg's followers started harassing and threatening me so I closed down my YT channel, but I will make a new YouTube channel with a new review of L&D.

Seconded.

Well, that's more Dark Albion than L&D. In L&D I'm very vague about what religion to the point that most people reading the book would just assume it's catholicism.

The fact is, in Dark Albion, the church is the medieval catholic church with a singular name change. And the reason for that was that in my experience there are so many players with such a fucked-up view of Christianity that they just can't bring themselves to suspend those biases in historical play. They jump in with all their prejudices and end up warping their whole character's perspectives; but if you change "jesus" for "sol invictus" suddenly all that vanishes as if by magic.

Thats high functioning sociopath.  I mean I may be totalitarian left, but that dont make you wrong about storygaming and white wolf and GNS theory and all that. My early days were all becmi hexcrawls which is perfectly serviceable gamist play. I evolved into simulationist sandboxer as I got older. But storygaming never clicked with me.

How do you feel about the suggestion that the OGL and the subsequent OSR have deprived the world of some actually novel systems? I think that many of the designers of OSR games are quite capable, including you, but have let the availability of the D20 template keep them from being more ambitious. Of course, I realize that some of those new games would fail but even a few succeeding would do good things for the hobby.

Apparently I'm fooling some people. By saying Sol Invictus instead of Jehovah and saying Apollonius instead of Jesus, that automatically made it OK to not just play but to imagine that there could be good people in an institutional Church that is otherwise exactly the same as the Catholic Church in the 15th century.

I would disagree. There's still non-OSR or D20 systems being created.  And what's more, the perception that the OSR somehow "limits" creativity is wrong. It's the same false conceit that post-modern art takes on. It wants to pretend that making an installation consisting of pouring 2L cans of paint all over the floor is somehow "more creative" than making something new using the rules of more traditional art forms that somehow surprises people with its innovation.

Most non-clone OSR systems are VASTLY more creative in an actually intelligent and practical way than most "avant-garde" forge-style games.

The last thing the hobby needs is more systems.

Lion & Dragon's compatibility with classic Dungeons & Dragons and retroclones is a positive.

Lion & Dragon/Dark Albion are very different games to Dungeons & Dragons despite using the same core rules.

This is true.

For the very simple reason that designing new game systems that work is actually really fucking hard. And takes a lot of work.

So settings and games that would not otherwise see the light of day or be served up with a half-baked system, actually can make it to your gaming table in a usable form.

Still easy to mine for ideas even if you are not a fan of the d20 system.

Quote from: Malleustein;1074285The last thing the hobby needs is more systems.

.

No, more system experimentation is good for the hobby. Period.

But that does not mean there is not innovation to yet be had with existing systems.

Even subtle tweaks to a system can have big influences in campaign play.

And for L&D, the OGL makes the most sense as the OSR fanbase is his target market. Why would he pour the time into creating a new system when your market is not asking for it?

That being said, all percentile systems need to die on a bonfire and be confined to the dustbin of history. But that's just me.

Yes, designing a new system is either very hard or very easy. It's very easy if you don't give a shit and want to create a mediocre or poor system. It's hard to create something that's really good and also different enough from D&D to make that difference worthwhile.
