I've been looking on Ebay and I can't seem to find the little black books.  Was there a collection printed?

EDIT:  Pay no mind! I was being a dummy!

OT, AKA CT or LBB traveller, had a major flaw: It used the mechanic where armor only reduced the chance of being hit, but did not reduce damage if you were hit.

God, I hate that mechanic!!!

Gurps traveller is pretty good, as much as I hate to advocate anything SJ is associated with.

I found the original box set for five bucks.  But there is another bidder, and it may cost dearly.

Let the games begin!

If you really, really don't like the armour mechanic, you could try laying your hands on Striker, which had an alternative damage system (as well as a vehicle design system and rules for miniatures).

QLI (travllerrpg.com) has a LBB 1-3 in one book that's very nice. It's 2nd edition and the pages are a touch cropped but it's all three books right after each other + a short story/Traveller blurb and color cover.

FFE has a FBB (floppy big/black book) of CT 2nd edition books 1-8.

If you're getting books 1-3 I'd recomend also getting book 4 and/or QLI's Personal Weapons of Charted Space. Book 4 has weapons and armor but focuses on military stuff, PW has more civilian stuff but no armor. Both really supplement 1-3's lists which aren't that different from 1977.

i just picked up the QLI 1-3 books, but have since ordered the 1-8.
the 1-3 is nice, and includes (as Casey777 mentioned) a bit of decent fiction as an intro, and some interesting info on the history of Traveller (# of units printed/sold for the original books, etc.)

more than likely i'll let the players share this copy, and keep the 1-8 for myself.

there are also lots of house rules out there ( like here and here ) for people not quite comfortable with the default rules, and a wealth of additional campaign notes, adventures, etc.

I think I found the FBB you were talking about.  What's FFE?

Mr. Analytical

After having played with Balbinus' LBB (and I now realise that that sounds absolutely filthy) I must admit I was quite impressed and intend to hunt down a copy.

I'm surprised it's not in print.  I'm sure if you did a print run of like 500 copies that they'd all sell.

If you like the LBBs, The Traveller Book was an excellent alternative.

FFE should be shipping a CT CD-ROM soon (orig. date was 11/1, but that got pushed back) for about $35 with all the books and adventures.  Soon to follow is a similar compilation of JTAS issues.  Allegedly searchable and the like.

Figures, right after I've pretty much completed my collection of CT reprints...
For fuck\'s sake, these are games, people.

And no one gives a fuck about your ignore list.

What exactly is the Traveller Book?
I'm looking (after buying the compiled LBB 0-8) for something detailing the history of the Imperium, more background info/races/tidbits, etc.

thanks,
