Title: Last night Mike Mearls saved my game!
Post by: Settembrini on December 06, 2006, 02:40:24 AM
Rock on WotC!
Rock on Mearls!

I played a Warblade from the book of nine swords yesterday in our Savage Tide campaign that just started.

Awesome!
Remember when I complained about D&D not giving me good options for A Sword & Board Fighter?
It´s all there!

If you chose schools like Iron Heart, you even can keep the flavour very non-wuxia, low-fantasy.

Ultra sweet stuff, and the other players were excited to have a badass  like my new Character with them.

It feels like what I always envisioned a fighter to be: tactical and flexible.

Great stuff. D&D 4 definitely should redo the fighter along those lines.

If I don't get this book for Christmas I am now definitely buying myself a copy.  Thanks for the tip!

Mearls saved your game? My copy cites Richard Baker, Matt Sernett, and Frank Brunner as designers.

Didn't you get the memo?  We all drink the Mike Mearls koolaid around here.  But seriously, doesn't he have a development credit or something on that book?

Amazon doesn't list him for the book. They don't even list any WotC books with his name.

Pen & Paper (http://www.pen-paper.net/rpgdb.php) attributes development credits to him for PHB II and Power of Faerun.  The 9 Swords entry there is incomplete though.

In my copy it says:
Developers: (Lead) Mike Mearls

I understand he´s the brain behind it all, and the others are allowed to write some fluff, and present feats and maneuvres to Mearls, who than pulls out his red ink and sends the designers back to the drawing desk.

Nine Swords is really a blast. It had me all excited just thinking about all the coolness that comes out of that book. Sweet stuff! It plays like Palladium Covers look.

I´ll never play a fighter again, unless he has maneuvres.

Mike Mearls saved Vin Deisel from drowning once.

Mike Mearls doesn't spit into the wind. The wind changes direction for him.

If he's that important, why doesn't his name hit the cover?

Because he's like the sun on a cloudy day, even though you can't see him, you know he's there.

Wow, you have a serious man-crush on for Mike, don't you?!

There's an odd but strangely compelling plug.

My complaint about Book of Nine Swords is that, plainly put, it makes the fighter obsolete for most purposes. I'm not a fan of that.

The Fighting Man/Fighter has been renamed 'Warrior' and sent to the NPC ghetto since 3.0 rolled out.  They just decided to call this one class 'Fighter' when 'Feat Monster' would have been more appropriate.

Quoteit makes the fighter obsolete

The fighter was made obsolete by all other classes and add-ons. Now he´s back for vengeance!

Tactical, flexible butt-kicking: Yay!

Trivia:
Did you know that Mearls nearly became a co-founder of a wellknown indie site, but instead chose to concentrate on his freelancing?

The "fighter" archetype never was lost, the Fighter class is worse than ever. Who would want to play a straight fighter when you've got a warblade. Apart from all the kung fu stuff, they can switch focus and specialization whenever they like...

QuoteThe "fighter" archetype never was lost,

Warblade is the new fighter. And you can even play him without manga-kungfu aesthetics.

Sweet, sweet awesome.

"Last night Mike Mearls saved my game!" actually fits with "Last night a DJ saved my life!", and thus a gaming filk was born.

"Mearls" is pronounced with two syllables?

Actually I oftentimes use lines from songs in thread and blog titles. And the song mentioned was exactly the one I was alluding to.

We´d have to sing:

"Mea - hearls", I guess.

or

"Mr. Mearls"

or

"Mikey Mearls"

How about that:

Last night Mr. Mearls saved my game
Last night Mr. Mearls saved my game
yeah
'cause I was sittin' there bored to death
And in just one book he said: You gotta get up
You gotta get off
you gotta get down
boy.
You know
you drive me crazy
Fighter
You've got me turning to another class.
Buildin´ my melee guy
you make me crie -
Fighter
Why are you designed die?
And if it wasn't for maneuvres I don't know what I do.
Last night Mr. Mearls saved my game
Last night Mr. Mearls saved my game from a broken class.
Last night Mr. Mearls saved my game
Last night Mr. Mearls saved my game with a book.
You know I looked into my PHB - didn't get very far
I know.
Before I had you on my mind - why be so unkind?
You've got your feats all around
all around your levels.
But I was trapped in love with you and I didn't know what to do
But then I flipped through the B9S
found out all I need to know.
- Check it out. -
Last night Mr. Mearls saved my game
Last night Mr. Mearls saved my game from a broken class.
Last night Mr. Mearls saved my game
Last night Mr. Mearls saved my game with a book.
Hey
listen up to your WotC author - you better hear what he's got to say
There's not a problem
That he can't fix
'cause he can do
On the double. And
you don't let it
Trouble your brain
'cause away goes trouble
Down the drain. Said
Away goes trouble down
The drain. - Well
all right.

Between the filk, and this comment:

I have to say that Settembrini, you rock. :D

Over at EnWorld they have a thread of filk, if I can find the link I'll pass it on to you in case you want to add this to it.

Sure! That might be cool.
I am not allowed to search ENWorld, so I´d appreciate avoiding the google-fu-hussle.
