I actually read the original book years ago, it was part of a 2013 bundle of holding. So I dug it out of my archive and re-read it.
That essay isn't even about Fauxrabia as a setting, it's more specifically about re-creating the Arabian Nights fairy tale story. He talks about the framing story, quick scene transitions, rapid travel by means of genies, and so on. The fact that he focuses on style and tone, rather than details, is especially appropriate for a discussion of genre re-creation of a specific type of adventuresome fairy tale.
Which makes Kobold's apologizing and self-censoring even sillier.
