This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

What is populair right now?

Quote from: Dumarest;972681At least you can use some of the material from here as you did on your June 29th entry. I only wish it were a book I could carry with me and refer back to as needed. You need to print it in the same size as the old Travelled books so I can keep it in my box.
For what it's worth, I've posted a summary of a  Classic Traveller session I improvised at a local convention a couple of months ago.
To give you a fix for a while...

Quote from: Voros;972614The Roll20 data agrees (D&D and Pathfinder dominant) and disagrees (WH, Star Wars and WoD are way bigger than the OSR). Course online play isn't totally reflective of home games but I bet it gives a better indication than most think, I've noticed more and more migrating to online play, even older players. And the future is most likely more online than anywhere else.

Roll20 also skews towards games with miniatures. I play in several online games, and the only one that uses something other than straight video chat is a Savage Worlds games. Everything else has no need for an interface. We just roll our own dice and talk to each other.

When I run, I actively avoid choosing games that will require any kind of interface as I find the prep involved to limiting. If I run something with minis at the tabletop, I can still easily improvise and scribble on the battlemat as needed. With minis in a virtual tabletop, I feel more bound to prepared maps and counters.

Obviously, there is no question that D&D and Pathfinder are top of the heap. I just think it gets a lot murkier past that point.

Quote from: TrippyHippy;972275The industry charts, from ENWorld, generally has it as:

1) D&D 5e
2) Pathfinder
3) OSR
4) D&D 3.5
5) D&D 4e
6) WOIN (ENWorld's own system)
7) Savage Worlds
8) AD&D 2e
9) World of Darkness
10) GURPS

The full set of data can be found here and here.

This is probably accurate. I see WoD dropping from nr. 2 till out of the top 5. Warhammer 40K and Frpg are both there some years ago. Personally I thought some of the other systems I mentioned like Fate, SW or Gumshoe would also see some play, because they got some Ennie nominations last few years. So people voted for them.
May I say that? Yes, I may say that!

When the Roll20 data was first published, I noticed right away that there were some interesting numbers there that made me question just how much could be taken from it. For example, if you look at that list and nothing else then Exalted is actually less popular than Anima: Beyond Fantasy and only slightly ahead of Fallout, a game which doesn't officially exist. Non-American players can sway the numbers quite a bit as well, which many people don't consider.

I'd wager the top of the list is accurate in that D&D/Pathfinder and a few others like Star Wars are well ahead of the curve, but after that it's next to impossible to tell.

Awesome, can't wait to read it. Probably tonight or tomorrow on a break as we are neck- deep in 4th of July events at a local park right now. Great homemade strawberry lemonade with real strawberries floating about and puerco con queso straight out of Guatemala.

In any case, D&D in its many forms is immensely more popular than anything else.

And I would guess that is partly because Exalted isn't a game that uses minis. There isn't a compelling reason to use Roll20 when playing it online.
