Yeah, but one of those three is probably cooked.

Quote from: rawma;1106316OK, here's a whole cherry orchard for you to pick through to support your arguments!

Mattel releasing a gender-neutral doll

Company with 19% of an $8 billion market, so not going "woke" because already going broke. Maybe it's not even that "woke", a full quarter century after Earring Magic Ken.

QuoteIn fact, dissent among boomers, Gen X-ers and even millennials may be a positive sign, according to Mattel's own researchers. "If all the parents who saw the dolls said, 'This is what we've been waiting for,' we wouldn't be doing our jobs," says Dreger. "That would mean this should have already been in the market. So we're maybe a little behind where kids are, ahead of where parents are, and that's exactly where we need to be."

Maybe RPG companies would be late to the market if they waited for theRPGsite conservatives to approve of their politics.

Anon Adderlan

Given Shane explicitly stated their decision to remove the CSA from #Deadlands will lose them sales, I'd say it's not only a thing, but a badge of honor.

Quote from: BoxCrayonTales;1105773These are elf-games where the typical pastime is crime fantasy.

But those poor hobos weren't given any other choice, or something.

Quote from: BoxCrayonTales;1105773And it's funny that  I wouldn't mind a setting where orcs are literally a persecuted minority or an alien planet populated entirely by hermaphroditic catboys,

But 'hermaphrodite' is considered a transphobic slur these days, for reasons.

Quote from: Charon's Little Helper;1105889That's like saying that not all serial killers are bad guys.

It's not their fault they're a psychopath, you ablest scum.

Quote from: tenbones;1105782The RPG industry is so small that outside of WotC - it's cottage at best where you can go for a long time with a shoe-string budget and handful of fans. The ceiling is so low that a small base can support most lines with minimal effort.

The barrier to entry has never been lower, but have the quality of games ever been higher?

Quote from: Ratman_tf;1105783I think most people tune out or just don't notice the wokeness.

Hard to ignore when #SJW constantly and aggressively 'correct' you for getting it 'wrong'.

Quote from: Ratman_tf;1105783if Paizo goes "broke", it's going to be because not enough people made the leap to PF2.

Quote from: Dimitrios;1105798I suspect that's correct. If Paizo does go under, it will be the popularity of D&D 5e and a lack of enthusiasm for PF2e that does them in.

Won't stop people from blaming the wokeness for whatever success/failure it has though.

Quote from: Mistwell;1106021WOTC is also selling more books total than they've ever sold in the history of their company, and possibly the history of TSR (though records from TSR are so poor it's unclear).

I sometimes wonder how some folks who are on this message board have found themselves in such a cave away from the RPG industry that they don't realize just how f'ing HUGE D&D is right now.

And yet the size of that market pales in comparison to #MtG, which has shrunk considerably due to wokeness.

Or bad business decisions. Hard to tell.

Quote from: jhkim;1106152I blame video games

Thank god you don't blame tabletop games. Cause that would be awkward.

Quote from: rawma;1106316OK, here's a whole cherry orchard for you to pick through to support your arguments!

Mattel releasing a gender-neutral doll

And sure enough the woke are already complaining about how the dolls enforce the gender binary because of how customizable they are. Because god forbid we let children decide how they want to play.

And that's relevant to RPGs because woke designers also want games where certain choices are simply not possible or made for you. You mean you can choose to be a Nazi in Vampire? Or a slave owner in #Rifts? Or a member of the CSA in #Deadlands? Not on my watch. So ironically once again the people who will have the biggest problem with these dolls are ultimately the same folks it's being marketed to.

GIMME SOME SUGAR

I'm not familiar with sales figures of tabletop rpgs, but I don't see the same get woke go broke tendencies when it comes to rpgs compared to movies for instance. Maybe roleplayers are too loyal and ignore the wokeness of certain products, since they can change and customize rpgs and scenarios at home. Maybe there is a lack of rpg alternatives. Of course, you can always play F.A.T.A.L. complete with its charming anal circumference or turn the card game Prison bitch into a tabletop rpg. But whatabout some serious, big products that leaves out gender politics, gives the bluehaired and pierced Twitter whales the finger and concentrate on delivering a quality product void of fake tokenism, instead of catering to non-binary leftists and other loud minorities?

This seems strange to me. It takes no great skill to have a game you wrote fizzle. I know about these things!

It's unclear how a game designer can make you play any particular way. They can give you resources that make it easier or harder, but nobody can stop you. If nothing else, the player can storm out of the game session and go and write their own game. And this is how a guy playing in a D&D game with Gygax, unhappy he couldn't be a wizard with a sword, ended up writing Synnibar.

Roleplaying games are a social creative hobby, so they attract people who are social and/or creative. Not all of them, of course, but enough that no game designer can really restrict people much. Even as twelve year old dweebs we were creating our own AD&D1e weapons and character classes. Everyone wanted the glaive from Krull or the triple-bladed sword that fired blades, and the Amazon class was pretty popular.

There's a number of games and companies that remain very much unwoke. Mostly they don't give a defiant middle finger but just concentrate on making good games. Of course there's a few independent and small producers that are all about the defiant middle finger.

Quote from: jhkim;1105992So, as a genuine question, do you feel that RPG purchases affects wider politics? i.e. If you could organize a successful boycott against Paizo over SJW something, do you feel you would have struck a blow against the wider political/cultural movement of SJWism?.

Have you posted on RPG.NET about their decision  to cancel ACKS or anywhere other calls for boycotting an RPG or it's creators who do not pass the SJW purity test?

What was the whole issue about ACkS in the first place? I was given a copy yesterday as a surprise gift from a good friend when he went to Gencon this year.

Their claim was that the author is a racist, or a sexual predator. Or both those things. Or an enabler of someone who was either one or both those things. I honestly find it hard to keep track of their ever-fluid list of offenses and those you're supposed to avoid for having committed said crimes. All I know for certain is that if you post in support of ACKS either there or at any of the rpg-related Reddits, you will have Wokefire rained down upon you.

I still think ACKS is a fine game and fills a neat niche in the gaming space.
The more clichéd my group plays their characters, the better. I don't want Deep Drama™ and Real Acting™ in the precious few hours away from my family and job. I want cheap thrills, constant action, involved-but-not-super-complex plots, and cheesy but lovable characters.

As I recall, it was that they were calling Macris a neo-Nazi or something similar, he said 'stop having the moderators do this or I might have to talk to my lawyer, or just ban the topic altogether,' and they went with option 2 (although they always talk about him 'threatening legal action' without explaining their part in it).
