Thanks for the additional explanation. It would be interesting if it was based on something historical, but an RPG in-joke1 certainly isn't without precedent.

Some general advice when it comes to playing DSA/TDE 5th edition.

Character creation is bloody complex. So using a character builder, or premade characters is a wise idea, unless you have lots of time, or are a bit of a gearhead. Also ensure that the characters fit the adventure. It is very doable to build a brilliant pastry chef character in DSA. Unless the adventure you are going to run calls for one, that is problematic....

Get on the same page about which rules you are using. Only use the bits you either really need, or think are fun. It is fine if 1 character uses some weird bit of rules chrome the rest does not. The system is set up to allow for that.

This is one of those games in which combat is serious and getting wounded makes your character less effective in most pursuits. Skills and diplomacy are the traditional solutions. Magic is mostly there for support, or for when things have gotten desperate.

The game has very rich setting and allows for very detailed characters with all sorts of neat ties to the setting. It allows you to build a mighty immortal witch who looks like a centerfold, or a simple farmhand who is traveling the world for a couple of years before he settles down for a boring life as a farmer and they can be equally competent and fun to play. This is where DSA succeeds as a game.

The mood of TDE.

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay with all of the grime replaced with a cleaner pseudo-historical feel. Sort of the cleaned up version of history taught in elementary school. If D&D is a Disney Princess Film. DSA is a film of the same faerie tale filmed in a real castle, with period appropriate clothing, combat choreography, using real medieval combat manuals as a guideline and the sort of magic you would expect in a Disney Princess Film instead of the humans with the power of a WWII Howitzer you see in D&D.

So we finally got to making characters. 

We have:

  • last-of-his-line noble turned mercenary
  • member of the White Guild
  • firnelf
  • Blessed of Phex with the Merchant variant
Everything went ok so far but our Blessed player had a question we couldn't find an answer to.  The Blessed special ability Strong Blessing says that the PCs Blessings are considered QL2 instead of QL1, but from what we can see none of the 12 Blessings rely on QL for any effect.  So what does the ability actually do?  Is it just up to the GM to wing a slightly better result?

Our first actual play session is later this week.  I don't think we've played a game this crunchy in a while.  We'll see how it goes.

Good chance they thought they would make up something later in the design proces and forgot to do it.

But there are some benefits there. Luck Blessing is (I guess) twice as powerful. And I vaguely remember QL's are tied to how difficult it is to dispel something.

A priest of Phex being able to add 2 sp's instead of one on a skill check, because of luck feels thematic.

I haven't ran in about a year and a half, but we had that come up as well.

The Q2 doesn't increase any bonus for blessings, it simply treats it as a Q2 result...for dispelling purposes or anything else that would create a contest between Quality levels.
