This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Independant RPGs, GNS, and assorted thoughts on the Forge and IPR

Oh, my dear Pierce!

I reviewed some stuff you wrote on RPG.Net!

I now understand that you have a definite man-crush on me, or that at the very least we are chipped from the some wood. So to say.

You should drop your Mensa/Studienstiftung-like-stance and unite forces with this very Settembrini in order to form Naphtatron.

Quote from: joewolzI want to know, through inquiries such as the one that started this thread, why they can't return to a more open and friendly organization for the independent publisher?  It seems to me the most useful part of the Forge for the independent publisher is the physical aspects: marketing, format, layout, etc.
Is that all? Then why the fuck are you asking us? Ask them. Do you go to the Russian Embassy to ask why the US doesn't let more immigrants in? No! You go to the US Embassy.

The Prussian Gamer is out of control.

That, or he's been postwhoring for his new user name level.

Studienstiftung, me???

That's a low blow.

I'd rather be called retarded by Luke Crane.

1: Because we're more likely to provide a real, though speculative answer versus their party line. Asking them is like asking the Republican party why they sling vile rhetoric against Dems, and vice versa. You're better off asking neutral political watchers, or at least opponents and try to get a general spread.

2: You're kind of a jerk.

3: Sett, you're post-whoring. It's getting old. What the hell,  man.
God in the Machine.

Here's my website. It's defunct, but there's gaming stuff on it. Much of it's missing. Sorry.

I've got a blog. Do you read other people's blogs? I dunno. You can say hi if you want, though, I don't mind company. It's not all gaming, though; you run the risk of running into my RL shit.

No, I'm fascinated by Pierce as well. He has to post all that stuff publically.

Swing and a Miss, JimBob.  Swing and a Miss.  I ask these questions here for Thanatos02's reason #1 AND because I want people here thinking about this kind of stuff.

We have Hinterwelt and Clash and TonyLB and Luke Crane and a few other actual independent designers RIGHT HERE.  They represent a broader spectrum of theory than those at the Forge.  Even luke, who I thought was a dick, is turning out to have less of the Forge pretension than I thought.

[digression]In fact, I think luke gets the point that the Forge is really just a marketing tool at this point.  Based on how he "talks" here, it seems that he gets that anyway...or he's trying to impress me.[/digression]

With all these designers practicing their trade here: WE CAN BECOME THAT COMMUNITY!

You're right, if I didn't have the idea of subtly inferring that we could do more for our hobby than bitch about RPG.net and the Forge.  It would certainly never be our focus, but we have a forum for applicable theory and designing games.  My first game will be made with suggestions from a community, but it will be this one, which is NOT a marketing tool.

And JimBobOz and Marco and Silverlion and Levi. Unfortunately I won't be much help, as I pay no attention to any theories - they generally just confuse me. It's much easier for me to design without a theory.

I don't think I count as an "independent designer." You need to have a big list of agmes written, or some online cred or something ;) Also, I have no theory except Cheetoism, and that's too "anti-intellectual" to be a theory, I was told. More craft, anyway.

What the fuck?

Sorry if I seem like an anti-intellectual member of the proletariat here, but I'm firmly in the camp of "Fuck art, lets dance" on this one. All the debate about GNS and the Forge has done nothing but act as a distraction from actual play in games or writing actual games. You can write/play a game or talk about it, just like you can stare at a delicious meal or you can eat it, with a game its more fun to write/play it and with a meal its more satisfying to eat it.
